Q: Will Having My Wisdom Teeth Removed Decrease My Tmd Symptoms

I went to the dentist for the first time in 9 years (gross, I know) because of intense pain and cracking in my left jaw joint. Also, I am ALWAYS tired and have head, neck, and back pain. I grind my teeth very hard during my sleep and am told that I even bite at the air during my sleep. Hearing from my fiance that I do that was extremely embarrassing because I had no idea. The dentist told me that I probably have TMD and that it might have been caused by my orthodontist requiring me to have 11 teeth pulled before getting braces so that my wisdom teeth would have enough room to come in straight. The new dentist advised me to immediately have my wisdom teeth removed (all four have completely grown in). While I respect her opinion, I am worried that if I have my wisdom teeth removed--I'm not going to have a whole lot of teeth left. Has anyone else experienced relief of TMD symptoms because he or she has had his or her wisdom teeth removed? Does anyone think that doing this will help me?

Oh wow Helen, that's a tough question to answer; practically impossible to know beforehand. I am concerned to read that you had 11 teeth pulled for braces. I don't know your age, but orthodontists (most) don't do that anymore and instead expand the jaw and palate using a type of splint and screws (I don't think splint is the right word). There is a lot of research out now that backs the theory that no teeth should be pulled, especially certain molars. You must have that stability that only the molars can give you.

I'm going to have to recommend that you see another dentist. You should even go to more than just one or two. Sorry about that. I'm just not comfortable with her advice.

Regarding your pain and grinding - you should see about getting a good bite splint to protect your teeth if for nothing else. Check out the postings for Jodester which I'm going to bump up for some self-help treatments. I hope and pray that something will work for you.

God bless...

Hey
for me having my wisdom teeth did nothing. If you have to have them out you have to have them out. Tmj symptoms will increase big time. just give yourself time to heal and dont go too fast. for you you could see improvement in the long run. it will just be hard after you get them pulled.

Like Dyan Said
once they are out, just be careful. I had SLIGHT symptoms of tmj when my OMS saw a glimpse of my upper wisdom teeth and told me that "we need to go get them now so when we get your tmj under control, we won't have to pull them then." My dentist told me not to do it as he could BARELY see them on my xrays.
Well I did it and ever since the day after surgery, I have been in pain. There has not been a day since then I have not had pain.
Maybe since they were so far up (all I remember from the surgery was my head being thrown around) that that is why I had a bad outcome. I sure hope yours is different.

I Agree With Carol
WOW that makes me nervous. that is alot of teeth to have pulled. go get another opinion. having that many teeth out is going to be a TRAUMA and you already have tmj. get some more opinions. PLEASE good luck!!! cindy
