Q: Splints That Allow You to Talk Clearly ?

I just got a splint from my orthodontist three days ago, I am still adjusting to it, it definitely solves my TMJ problem but its giving me some other discomfort in the front of my mouth, I am assuming that over time I will get used to it.

Anyways, I seem to be a pretty bad TMJ case where just taking the splint out at all causes discomfort and its to where I feel better with it in because my face feels so awkward and unsupported when I take it out. The problem is that I have a lot of difficulty talking with the splint in so I've been taking it out whenever I have to talk to someone and this is causing me more pain and problems.

I am wondering if anyone knows if there are different types of splints and if I should consider going to other TMJ specialists even just to see what type of splint they would give me that might be better than this one for going about my daily life. I got this one from my orthodontist who I went to for my braces when I was a kid, now I am 22. I think I am going to have to wear my splint 24 x 7 for a long time because I want to rid myself of TMJ and I realize that I might not ever be able to be without a splint unless I get surgery.

Hey
Its not true that you will be 24/7 for a long time with a splint or that you will have to for most of your life. Its getting the right person to work for you. I have had tmd all my life. I no longer wear anything.

what kind of doctor do you go to? Ive had all kinds of splints but there is one that will get rid of tmd so to speak. Its called a neuromuscular splint. In my opinion that is the way to go.

you will bet use to the splint. youve only had it 3 days--give it time.

From everything I've read all of the splints need to be worn for at least a few months 24 x 7 to be effective. This is a problem since I have to be able to talk to go about my normal day, I can't just sit at home all day and do nothing for a few months.

Hey
if you want to get better you are gonna have to give it time. this is an extremly complex joint. It wont heal overnight. Ive been doing this all my life I know. you are gonna have to resign yourself to the fact that its a slow healing process. nothing is gonna work over night. it takes time. just give it a chance. a few months is nothing compared to liveing with it for the rest of your life.
