Q: 2 Month Old Wont Sleep In His Crib!!

I cannot get my 2 month old to sleep in his crib, or on a bed. He will only sleep in my arms, right next to me or in his swing. If he falls asleep in my arms and I try to put him the crib, exactly 5 min later he will wake up. I've tried to keep putting him in there but he keeps waking up. I did it to the point where he had bags under his eyes because he wouldn't get any sleep!! Does anybody else have this problem? How do you get him to sleep in his crib for naps!!! When will he finally sleep in the crib? It really doesn't bother me, but I have to bring him to the babysitters house this week for the first time and I know they won't hold him for the entire time he's there!!! Help!!!

I feel your pain. My son is almost 4 months old and we have the hardest time getting him to sleep in the crib. In the beginning we let him sleep in the swing because he wouldn't sleep in his crib at all..but the swing broke! So we had a few days without it before it got fixed and took that as a perfect time to break him of the swing habit. I would say thats probably one thing you want to get him out of because eventually he'll get to big for the swing! Since that we've tried very hard to get him in his crib. I could never figure out why he won't sleep there, I wondered if he was cold, if the bed was to hard, if he was hungry..I made sure he was fed, gave him a blanket, I put a blanket under him so it was more comfy, I even bought one of those music things for in his crib and nothing worked. We share a room so for a few weeks I even took the rail off of him crib, lowered the matress and moved it right next to my bed so that he thought he was in my bed (don't worry he can't roll and the small gap was covered so there was no hazzard of him falling) this seemed to work and i thought he was used to the crib but as soon as I moved the crib back he stopped sleeping in it.

But enough rambling about my problem... Now we have him to the point where we can get him to sleep in the crib the first part of the night but once he wakes up he is with me the other part. We just rock him to sleep (my son won't put himself to sleep either) and then lay him down in the crib. If he wakes we have his binky there and put it in and pat his bottom until he falls back asleep, we don't talk to him or pick him up. Its usually works for naps to.

I don't have any extrodinary advice but if you ever solve the sleeping problem let me know!!! I long for the days when I can lay Brayden down and he will put himself to sleep for the entire night!!!!

I'm not sure what to do about your problem either. It must be just as hard on you not getting any sleep too.

I can say for sure that you may be surprised at how different your baby is for the sitter. My son is used to being rocked to sleep for naps and bed. I was so worried that at the sitter (grammies) she wouldn't be able to do this due to having other kids to tend to and he'd cry. He doesn't. She puts him down at rest time and he goes right out. He's a lot easier to get to go to sleep for us now too.

Good luck

The reason why they won't go down in their crib to sleep is because for 9 months they were snuggled in your uterus all warm and cozy, and now they're expected to lay sprawled out in a crib. It's not what they're use to. I read ''the happiest baby on the block" and that book helped me out alot with Ava. She slept in our arms for all of her naps for 5 months straight and at night we'd swaddle her. You can't just swaddle them though depending on what kind of baby you have. There's something called the 5 Ss the book talks about. It's for fussy babies and also to get your baby to go to bed and sleep longer. Ava started sleeping 6 hours straight at 5 weeks and 9 hours straight at 10 weeks b/c we swaddled her and used and still do use a noise machine. The swaddling makes them feel cozy like they did in your belly. I'd get the book and read it and try it. You may think your baby hates to be swaddled at first, but they don't. We thought Ava hated it too, you have to read the book to see how to turn on their calming reflex. I bought the book for two relatives that didn't read it and said, " she hates to be swaddled". I don't believe them. It's too long to explain. Just get the book, it'll save your life. We just started putting her down in her crib 2 months ago. She naps there and sleeps there at least 1/2 the night.

he wont go in his criub because he is now gotten used to being held. He will slowly snap out of that ....you should let him cry for 10 minutes in his crib alone...i had the same issue for a little while and i let him cry it out and now there is no prob he will sleep anywhere.

put his crib next to you and just hold his hand or gently rest your hand on his chest so he knows your still there. if he starts crying just stroke his cheek and show him you are there but without picking him up

or you could hold him for 10 minutes before putting him down to be sure he's in a deep sleep. It takes a baby about 10-15 minutes to go into deep sleep.

I've tried everything!! I tried to let him cry it out, but he beat me out. He cried for 20min straight the poor little guys voice was so hoarse. I have an Eddie Bauer little collapsable travel bed I put in the living room with me and when he falls asleep i put him in that. He slept for 30min in it. I'm slowly trying to break him of his habits.
My mom said it's my fault for holding him all the time. I think she's wrong. Babies need to be held!!!!

You shouldn't be letting a 2 month old cry it out in my opinion.

Dont Worry
My baby slept in her swing until she was around three months. When they are this young you cant really have any bad habits that will effect him long term. Eating habits and sleeping habits go hand in hand, I highly reccommend the book " Babywise" It will teach you how to put your baby on a regular feeding schedule that will influence his sleeping patterns as well. It has great advice for sleeping habits at night and for naps.

It will get easier I promise! Smile

ALSO I think swaddleing and sleep positioners are great tools as well at this young age. I swear by the lavender scented baby bath and lotion before bedtime too!

My son hates to be swaddled and he's like hoodini. He can get out of it no matter how tight the swaddle is. I do love the Aveeno Lavender baby lotion. It smells so nice and .I think it works wonders.

I also don't agree with letting them cry it out. Little babies learn to trust by crying and having someone there to pick them up, and .I don't think you can hold a baby too much. They love to be cuddled and be near the people they love. Maybe start putting the baby in his bed when he's awake and in a good space. Show him it's a good place.

I def. agree. Babies need to learn trust. My daughter doesn't sleep in her crib. She sleeps with me and she's 7 months old. I couldn't bear to try the "cry it out" technique so in my bed she went and she's been there for 7 months and we're both happy as can be! We sleep all night and she rolls over to nurse whenever she wants!
