Q: Fractured Humerus

I recently fractured my left humerus and am now in a sling for 6 weeks. The pain is unbearable. Embarassed Pain meds don't even seem to work. But my problem is that I have gained over 5 pounds in the last 9 days. I know I have had to be totally inactive but my appetite has left me. I am actually eating less now than I did before the accident. Clothes that I got into last week now don't even come close to fitting. I don't understand. Anybody got any answers?

Five pounds isn't too much to be concerned about. We have a normal fluctuation in water weight that we as women can get. Also, did you have an operation on your arm or were you hospitalized? If you had an IV drip, the saline solution in those bags make you retain water, so it will take a couple weeks for that to get out of your system. It can also be a side effect of your medication.

Constant pain can make you lose your appetite, especially if you are the one that has to get your own food. Maybe there is another medication that you can take that will work better than the one you are taking. I'm sure your doctor will be able to help you with that.
