am I still protected even if I don't take my sugar pills and decide to have sex during this week. I am on Yasmin.

also does the start date of your period vary, sometimes I'll get mine on the 3rd day and sometimes on the 5th, is this usual?

I'm on Yasmin as well. Smile

If this is your first month of taking it, I recomend using a condom, any time after you should be fine.

Mine usually comes during the 5th placebo pill and I asked my doctor if that was ok, and she said it was. She also said, "as long as you get it during the placebo pills you're fine."

But since you just started the pill it might be a little irregular the first few months.

actually Ive been on it for a while, about 6 or 7 months now.

My biggest concern was whether or not I actually had to take the sugar pills? Or am I naturally protected during these 7 days?

The sugar pills are just that: Just sugar, or another inert material.

These pills contain no horomones, and thus, do nothing for your body. The lack of horomones is what causes your "period", which is actually just withdraw bleeding, caused by the lack of hormones.

You will not ovulate during this week, thus you are still safe.

You don't have to take the pills since they don't contain any active ingredients. You will be safe either way. I personally don't take my placebo (sugar) pills either.

The sugar pills are just there to remind you to take a pill every single day and keep you in the habit of doing so.
