Q: An anti anxiety med w/ less side effects ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 29th, 2007
Suffer from anxiety, especially cannot sleep. Doctor had me on Welbutrin 100 mg and Seroquel 50 mg -hs-Stopped the Welbutrin 6 weeks ago when Dr away for I felt so nauseous, not knowing of enlarged gallbladder, and thinking it could be the pills. Can you advise an anti anxiety med with less side effects--I am afraid of the Seoquel --possible link to Cateracts and hi blood suger.--Do not like the addictiveness of Lorazepam and even with 1 mg still sleep fitfully but get back to sleep at times. Am also trying Melatonin at bedtime--3 pills under tongue.

Most anti anxiety drugs can be addictive or have side effects. The most common class of anti anxiety drugs are the benzodiazepines. Benzopiazepines include oxazepam, prazepam, lorazepam, alprazolam, chlordiazepoxide and diazepam. There are other anti anxiety drugs such as meprobamate, buspirone, hydroxizine and doxepin. These second class of drugs are useful for treating anxiety in the short term during crisis situations. After consulting a psychiatrist, you might consider trying alprazolam (Xanax) as a medication doctors recommend.
