Q: Jaw Pain

I was punched 15 years ago on the right side of the jaw, nothing happened at the time and it hurt for only a couple of days. Ive noticed over the years that when I open my mouth all the way, the left opens before the right, same when closing. I started to experience little discomfort from time to time, untill last week, It hurts terribly, the right joint (between the jaw and skull), I cant chew, laugh, cough, move my jaw side to side, without feeling Im getting stabbed in the jaw, even if I put my finger on my chin and press slightly in any direction it hurts. whats going on ?

I'm sorry to hear you got hit. It probably knocked your bite off and your body has been compensating until now (posture/stress?). Your symptoms do point to traumatic TMJ. If I were you, I would find a dentist as soon as possible who dedicates much of their practice to TMJ. You also might think about physical therapy.

If you are having problems to the point you can't function right now, you should ask your family doctor (or the dentist) for a muscle relaxant like Zanaflex, or Valium or Zanax for a few weeks to see if you can't get the muscles to relax enough to function. Treat your jaw like it is sprained. Rest it by eating only softer foods for now. Rotate using ice and moist heat.

These are just a few suggestions, but I would really get to the dentist as soon as you can. I pray that you will find the help you need.

God bless...
Carol
