Q: How are genital warts transmitted ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 24th, 2007
A few months ago i found a few small lumps around my anus. I did a bit of research and came to the conclusion it must be pinworm. Went to my GP today who without looking refered me to a GU clinic. they took one look and said it was warts and froze them. Thing is I've been with my girlfriend years. Have not cheated on her and have not come into any contact with anyone with warts. All the sites I go on say this is passed on sexually or by very close physical contact. I'm confused. Is this a miss diagnosis as I cant see how they have just magically appeared.
Thanks in advance

Sexually Transmitted Diseases Answer A2826
Genital warts (condyloma) are caused by the Human papiloma virus, or HPV. HPV is sexually transmitted but does not require penetration in order to transmit from one partner to another. Close contact from skin to skin is enough to spread the virus between partners. The incubation period required before genital warts appear is from six weeks to three months, although the virus may remain dormant into your cells before it grows into a wart.

One possibility for the recent contraction of the warts might be possible infidelity on your girlfriend's part. You may need to sit down with her and discuss the situation to learn more.
