Q: New to the Site & Have Questions About Nuvaring

Hi ladies!! I just started using the nuvaring last week and I have a few questions about it. #1, I had read on another forum that discharge was a big thing with the nuvaring and I am now starting to get that. Does it go away? Is it an always thing while taking this birth control? As with others, I'm not liking this whole discharge thing so I'm wanting to know what I can do about it. #2, my husband will be coming home for R&R in a few weeks and I know we can have sex with the nuvaring but is it gonna get pushed farther up there or feel uncomfortable for me or him? I just don't understand how that works, with the ring in that is. Embarassed #3, Ive recently been noticing that my ring has been slipping out lately. Is it b/c I'm not putting it far enough in or what? My GYN really didn't explain how it works or insertion like he was supposed to, so I'm kinda clueless about it and I just read the directions and they were very vague at that. So any advice, suggestions, tips will be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch ladies and I hope you all have a wonderful evening!! Very Happy

I don't think there is anything that can be done about the discharge. if it goes away, it goes away. If it doesn't, then you're stuck like me! I've always had heavy discharge.

From what I've heard, the ring cannot be felt during sex for most people, but occasionaly the male can feel it. it can be removed during sex as long as it is placed back correctly afterwards.

Insertion should stick it right up against your cervix, so it shouldn't be sliding out. If you aren't inserting it far enough, it may affect the potency...

Just to add, yes having intercourse may push the ring further up - but you will still be able to reach it to remove at the end of the 3 weeks, and it's good for it to be pushed up near your cervix.

There is a time limit on how long you can have the nuvaring out for sex - I think it's 3 hours - but check the drug information.

Some people have heavy discharge with the ring, others do not. I always noticed more discharge during the first few days after inserting a new ring, then it seemed to slow down.

As for feeling the ring during sex, some people can, some can't. My husband said at first he could feel it but it didn't bother him. Eventually he got used to it. I was never able to feel it when we were having sex.

If your ring keeps slipping out, you do not have it in far enough. When you are inserting the ring, you have to make sure that it gets in past the bone (I think it's the public bone) that you can feel through your vaginal wall.

You should pinch the ring in half and insert it into your vagina as far as you can with your thumb and index finger, keeping the ring pinched. Once you have it in as far as you can with two fingers, take either your index or middle finger and continue to push the ring further up until it passes the bone. You may have to push on the front and back of the ring so it sort of "wiggles" it's way up there.

Don't worry about the ring getting pushed up farther inside you during sex. It can't get lost up there. Smile In fact, the further up it is, the less likely it is to slip out.

So the discharge may or may not go away? I've only had it the ring in for a little over a week now and its the first time Ive used it. Im really liking it so far except for the discharge. Has there been some that they got discharge when they first started and eventually it went away?

Okay, apparently Im not putting it in right lol. Like I said in my original post I wasnt shown how to use it or anything of that sort. So pretty much just push it AS far AS I can? And pass the bone? Im sorry, I dont mean to ask so many questions about it, I just want to make sure Im doing it the right way. Ive pushed it as farther in this time, i havent checked yet to see if its come down or if its moved so Im hoping i did it right.

Thanks everyone!!

Yeah, the discharge may or may not go away. When I first started with the ring, I had a good bit of discharge for a couple weeks. But, after I had been on it for two or three months, I mainly had discharge on the day I put it in and for about a day or two afterwards.

Push the ring up inside you as far as you can past the bone. I think that the further it is inside of you, the better. It will be less likely to slip out when you are going about your daily activities, especially when using the restroom.

Doesn't Matter Where It Is....
The ring can sit anywhere in your vagina- it will not effect the potency if it is not far in. All that is happening is that your vaginal walls are absorbing the hormones from the ring. But it is true, the farther in it is, the less likely it is to come out. I never really had trouble with mine coming out except during sex, but that's ok as long as it's not out for more than 3 hours. All you really have to do to put it in is stick it up there and push it up as far as you can. It doesn't really matter as long as you are comfortable.

My man could feel it but It didn't bother him. And it might get pushed up there, but it can't go past your cervix so it doesn't really matter.
