Q: Another Discharge Question

Ok so I asked before about weird discharge and since my last period it's been white and there's been a lot of it, so a couple weeks ago I went to a GUM clinic and they took a swab to check for stds and bacterial infections etc. The results came back clear but when the nurse was doing it she said it just looked like a yeast infection and she gave me a pessary. I used it that night but it didn't work, and the week before that I'd also tried an oral tablet and that didn't work either. So basically I've had this white stuff all month and it smells a bit, although not as bad now. A couple of days ago it had changed and was yellowish in colour and a different consistency. I'm due for my next period in a couple days so this has lasted all month. Could all this be just normal for me or indicate something else? I'm on the pill, and my boyf thinks that might have something to do with it but I'm not sure.

Not a Disease
If all tests came back fine it is definitely the pill. BC not only prevents ovulation but it also thickens your endometrial lining, which is white, and contains sprem anti-bodies. Your body is just cleaning itself out and passing it with discharge. I highly reccommend cleansing once a day with Summer's Eve feminine wash or smething similar, and use to go wipes right before your persiod when discharge is exceptionally bad. Also, don't use anything except vinegar and water in your douche.

I'm going to disagree... You shouldn't douche, it can cause infections. It is not necessary. Your discharge is cleaning out your vagina- if you stop it, bad things can happen.

It could be the pill or it could just be normal. If it is really a big problem, I would talk to the gyno about it again and ask if she has any suggestions. The nurse should not have given you medicine for a yeast infections before the test came back-- that's why it didn't do anything, you didn't have an infection. Everyone has some amount of discharge, we all just deal with it. Don't douche. It takes away your body's natural defenses.

Thanks for the replies. I don't douche, I've never had much use for it. I know that discharge is used to clean etc, but I also know that a bad smell and more stuff than usual can indicate a problem. I think I'll monitor it for a while and note anymore changes, and maybe go back if it's bothering me.

Thanks for replying

Yep, douching is bad *ew!* People try to sanitize every part of themselves... and science is discovering that too much sanitation can be as bad as too little sanitation!

Not Really
The idea that douching is bad is the same as the idea that drinking is bad-it is only a problem if done wrong or too many times. Some women's vaginal systems cannot provide the same cleansing effects in their discharge as other women. In fact, if you have a poor diet, disease, or are on certain medications your discharge is not clean, but dirty. Douching a maximum of once a month will not hurt-especially if there is no history of PID in your family and if you use only vinegar and water since vinegar contains a special acid that is similar to that in a woman's body.

It is not for everyone, it is a matter of perference. I personally have douched once a month the week after my period for two years now. I have never once gotten an infection of any kind or had any vaginal discomfort.

Another thing I forgot to ask is about your choice of underwear. As funny as it may sound, a group of female researchers at Yale University have suggested that wearing undergarments made of anything but cotton can cause extra vaginal discharge or change in it. Thats a consideration as well.

I did know about the underwear thing. I normally only wear cotton types. There is one pair I bought, a very thin, extremely stretchy fabric and very breathable; and I really love them. It's almost like not wearing any underwear at all!
