I have had type one diabetes for eight years and have just now developed itchy skin on my lower legs. The itching is so intense that I scratch and the skin breaks easily thereby causing slow healing sores that leave scars. Also my scalp itches and the same scenerio. Any recommendations for the legs and scalp. I am presently using anti-dandruff shampoo and have tried nizarol on the scalp to no avail. I have tried treating the sores with antibiotic cream as well. What's up with all this itching? Am I the only one??? Sad

Itchy Skin
Hello, I have type 1 diabetes (27 years) I too have terrible itchy skin on lower legs which I can not stop scratchng, then causing wounds leaving scars. I use aloe vera to try to calm the itchy skin which has helped to a certain degree. I had the problem investigated several years ago but the specialists could not arrive at any diagnosis. However the only time I get any relief is after summer holidays being in the sun and sea then around the winter time it starts all over as it has now

Itchy Skin
My mom had this same problem. We tried a magnetic showerhead, and the dry cracking skin on her feet and legs cleared up after about a week.

Something to do with the changing of the properties of the water.

I can dig up were we got it. It had a 90 day money back guarantee, so we had nothing to lose.

Itchy Skin And Scalp
I use selsun blue for my scalp; nothing else works for me. I also use the wally world brand of eucerin for my body. Its not greasy, and the effects last for days.

Good luck.

Itchy Skin And Scalp
I have type 11 diabetis and for about a month now have the most itchy skin and scalp. It drives me krazy. I scratch my legs open and my arms till they bleed but they keep itching. I bought benidril cream which gives me some relief for a short time. I don't know what is causing it and the dr doesn't seem to know either.

Re: Itchy Skin And Scalp
I have had itchy scalp for about 8 weeks. I have T2 and on Metformin. My dermatologist could not figure out what the problem is and has put me on anti-pruritis and anti-histamine medications. My blood glucose is in control and he seems to think it was a shampoo or hair dye I have been using for 10 years. He never looked at my isolated itchy spots on my body: back, legs. The topical sometimes work, sometimes not. It seems to work better with the red itchy spots. I also have symptoms of urination urgency, but my psa is normal, or very slightly elevated, 4.2. The medicated shampoo sometimes heap with the itching but not a lot.
My questions are: Is there any blood test to diagnose this itch? Any allergen test that I can request to be done? I know it could be from dry skin, but I also use a cream specifically for diabetes. I read about not taking a hot bath or not scratching. It is hard to do, especially when one is sleeping; scratch, scratch, scratch. I have never had this problem in my life, and I am trying to figure out what the cause is, a number of possibilities:

- diabetic dry skin, not controlled
- growing cactus as a hobby and eating their fruit, tunas, to lower glucose level (prickly pear) and got pricked quite a bit in the process
- some kind of food allergy
- allergy to dust in my house, full of clutter
- stress and emotional outburst
- working and painting my cars, the material and paint used
- drug side effects: I now take seven everyday, three for T2, 2 for depression (Double Ds), one anti-histamine and one anti-pruritis Rx. The liver might have a hard time breaking them down and detox.
- a combination of symptoms

Any suggestions?

I think I have diabetes too, and I have the itching recently especially at night: arms, legs, body, scalp. I've read on the net that diabetes makes you susceptable to skin problems such as infections. I guess it's probably not due to food allergy or drugs because I don't take any drugs currently. It may have to do with bacteria, because I put my backpack on the ground when I go outdoors (eg subway) and when I wear the backpack my back itches in a similar way. So the bacteria probably got transferred to my bed too.

Also, when I'm itching the skin also felt kind of hot, I'm guessing that's caused by high sugar level at that time? (a few hours after meal)

PS the itching occurs on legs, arms, body, scalp and face

the skin looks normal but after scratching it breaks and leaves a very tiny red circle (~1mm) that bleeds and heals the next day, leaving a small scar.

I started having it early this month (Nov 2008).

Itchy skin around lower leg
I too have diabetes type 2 and get this problem of lower leg itchy skin and it does drive me mad especially at night when trying to get to sleep - I have used calamine lotion to some success but it is a bit messy and leaves the legs chalky white. I have also used tea tree skin cream as well as savlon cream. None of the above act quickly and have to be used regularly for days before I get some relief. My father who doesn't have diabetes has had the same problem for years and he uses betnavate off his GP and has been told by a specialist that this is a type of reumatism of the skin? I may try and find some of the remedies mentioned in this forum. I also have a scalp problem but not itching as much as small bumps that appear to be calcified eruptions that make tiny calcium type ball like deposits on certain parts of my scalp which then turn to sores that scab over - I have asked my GP what he thinks and he always fobs me off saying it is stress related! I now find that shampooing my hair daily with TGel therapeutic shampoo helps to keep it at bay but if I miss just once then it comes back quickly.
