Q: Thick White Substance Covering Stool/ Bowel

Should I be worried? When I had a bowel movement, there was a thick white substance resembling mucus covering my bowels. I could barely see the bowel for the white substance. The bowel was solid. I'm finishing an antibiotic and I started a birth control pill about four weeks ago. Can you tell me what's the probable cause?

I have never heard of birth control pills causing that. There are a lot of things that that could be.

Mucus in the stool is a symptom of irritable bowel syndrome. You can take a look at this digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/ibs _ez/#symptoms and see if you might have other symptoms of ibs.

Here is a whole list of things that can cause mucus to be in your stool: wrongdiagnosis.com/symptoms/mucus_stool/ca uses.htm

So there are a lot of possibilities. It's probably nothing to panic about if it was a one time thing and you don't notice any other changes. I would suggest mentioning it to your doctor the next time you go in though. If you notice other changes or if it happens again, you might want to make an appointment specifically for that just in case.

I may be having the same problem?
I'm having the same problem. My symptoms started maybe a month or 2 ago, around he same time I started my birth control pills as well. I am taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo.
