Q: Is neurological disorder genetic ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 20th, 2007
my question is regarding my 5 yo daughter. she has a genetic disorder that is passed on by her father. Both of her hands do the same thing at the same time. If she is coloring her other hand is going back and forth in the same motion. Her father's family never looked into this condition but I would like to know if there is a name for it and if there is a way of correcting it. It is almost like her brain is sending the same signal to both hands. She is a dominant right handed person. I would like to have some answers for her so that when she is old enough to realize what is happening and that she is different in that way, I can explain to her why it happens and maybe at some point give her some options to change this if she decides to.

According to your description, your daughter is probably experiencing some kind of neurological disorder, or "dyspraxia". I am not sure if the disorder is genetically conditioned or not, but your daughter definitely needs an examination by a pediatrician-neurologist in order to establish a diagnosis.
