Electric Shocks And Feeling Like Falling Posted: 05-19-07 16:34pm
a few nights ago, after trying for several
hours to fall asleep, i felt something
like electric shocks running through my
brain then i felt as though i was falling
and i was not able to move anything. this
whole sequence happened quite a few times,
i'd guess around 15 or so. while i'm not
able to say 100% positively that i was
fully conscious, i do know that i was
awake enough to feel pain (with the
electric shocks), be scared (with the
falling and temporary paralysis). also, i
knew right before i was about to go
through all of this each time before it
happened. i'm not really sure what to make
of any of this, so any ideas or
suggestions would be highly valued. thanks

I have had this feeling before. It seems
to happen to me right before a heavy
sleep. I just get sort of a jolt and
falling sensation. I think it is normal
and fairly common. There is a name for it,
but I can't think of it right now. I will
search for it and post the name when I
find it.

A hypnic or hypnagogic jerk is an
involuntary muscle twitch (commonly known
as a myoclonic twitch) which occurs during
the transition into hypnagogia. It is
often described as an electric shock or
falling sensation, and can cause movement
of the body in bed. Hypnic jerks are
experienced by most people, especially
when exhausted or sleeping uncomfortably.
