We are having a terrible time with Brayden going to sleep. I wake up 3 times a night still and its draining me! I just read a article in Parents magazine about sleeping and I'm thinking about trying a set bedtime routine. I was wondering what those of you who have routines do. Read, massages, bath?? let me know any of your tricks to get babies to sleep!

Also I know there are a few babies around Braydens age, Don, Jaylon, and whoever else is close to 13 weeks. I was wondering how much your children sleep during the day? Brayden doesn't sleep a whole lot and I read that babies sometimes don't sleep when they are over tired, so I was wondering if that couldbe it. He's not fussy but its a possiblitiy I suppose so I thought I'd see how much he is sleeping compared to others..

Thanks everyone

I would definately recommend a daily routine. It is hard to do at first, but it is well worth it once it's established because you will finally get some rest. With all three of my kids I would lay them down for two naps a day at that age, one in the morning and one in the afternoon and then I would lay them down for bed around 8-9pm. We always had the soothing bath routine, followed by a bottle just before bedtime. When they would wake up in the middle of the night I would keep it as dark and quiet as possible and would not engage them in any way, so that they would know it was time for sleep. Eventually, once you get into a routine, you will find that they don't wake up as much in the middle of the night. I think that it might be true that it is harder for them to sleep when they are really tired. Good Luck!

i have a daughter thats 3 1/2 months. we have a bed time routine. I give her a bath and wash her in lavender at 9pm and give her a bottle with mixed cereal in it and put her in bed at 10. she sleeps 10 1/2 hours now. I been doing this since before 2 months because she was waking up every 2-3 hour for a bottle. Cereal in her bottle helps alot!!!

Mia gets a bath around 7 everynight, then i massage her (thanks to sarah) and i brush her hair...what hair she has, i get her dressed and then we make her bottle...she sits in the high chair...we talk during this time and she tells me all about her day, (lol not really she just gabs and gabs.) we get her blanket and soothing (binkie or whatever you guys call it if you even use one.) we sit on the couch and I give her the bottle as i tell her a story or i read to her.

then i put her down and most of the time she rolls over and goes straight to sleep...once i stopped breastfeeding at 5 months i stopped getting her at night to feed her. If she woke she would cry for a few mins and then go back to sleep. this lasted for about a week and a half...now she sleeps like a pro!

good luck

Wow 10 1/2 hours! I'm lucky if I get 5 which is hard because naturally my body has always required lots of sleep! In the article I read, it said that I shouldn't allow him to fall asleep at the breast when I feed him, that after I feed him I should change his diaper or such and lay him in bed awake. Opps, guess I've been doing it all wrong. I always lay down next to him to breast feed and thats how I've been putting him to sleep! I'm gonna try changing that! I have heard lavendar does help so I'm planning on going out this afternoon to buy some lotion too!! I hope this works..

I'll try all your suggestions!

About the massage. Is there special techniques? Or just gently rub him? Let me know!

First night with the cereal she slept 6 hours. She sleeps a little longer each night. First time I bathed her in Lavender was in the middle of the day and she slept for 5 hours with that stuff. I had to wake her up because she was only 5 weeks and I was told to make sure she eats 2oz within a 4 hour period. It actualy scarred me and I didnt use it for awhile lol.

ha! thats so funny! Is it johnson and johnson that you use?

O and I'm sure rice cereal would help alot! I really want to hold off on that until he is 6 months, but that my personal preference. If a routine doesn't help and he seems to be waking up just because he's hungry I may change my mind.. We'll see how it goes in a few weeks!

He's sleeping right now! When I read about them being overtired I was like 'thats it, its naptime for you buster!'. I'm going to try to get him to nap more and see if that helps along with the rountine.

This weekend we will be out of town for long busy days (sisters college grad) so I'm sure thats not going to help his sleeping so if nothin else, he'll be well rested from these naps today!

I have heard the lavender bath works great. It says on the bottle not to use on babies under 3 months. Maybe because of sids? .Jaylon is 8 weeks so I haven't used the bath, but I do use Aveno lavender lotion. I am so much more paranoid with him.

I'm ashamed to say we have no routine what so ever. Some days he will be up for 3 hours at a time and then take a 3 hour nap and go on like that. Everything happens in 3 hour increments, because he eats faithfully every 3 hours during the day. It's like he has a little alarm clock in his belly! Laughing other days he will sleep all day. He goes to bed around 10:00pm and will sleep until 3:00am. Last night he slept until 5:00am!!! Wink I do not sleep until 5:00am though. I wake up many times to check on him, which is aggravating. I probably am the one who wakes him up. lol

Maybe you should check different sources in regards to not letting him fall asleep while nursing? Most babies do, and they keep the breast in their mouth as a sense of security (like a pacifier).

I thought Jaylon was closer to 3 months...Maybe its Jersey, I can't remember!!

Ya, I never really thought about him falling asleep at the breast as a problem. Its how I get him to sleep every single night and throughout the night when he wakes up. But I read it in Parent magazine, so I thought it should be pretty reliable. Maybe not?!

Brayden is just over 3 months so I'm gettin that lavender! Haha I'm so excited about it, I hope it helps!... He already had a bath this morning, but I think he'll be getting two today just so I can use it!! ha Very Happy

Jenny I wrote you back. If hes getting alot of formula throughtout the day most doctors suggest giving them some rice cereal. Especially if they are getting more than the suggest amount. Their tummys cant hold alot and may spit up alot of it. Amelia just went through this last week so her doctor told me to start giving her a some rice in each bottle.

Ya, I have heard no more then 32 oz every 24hours. But since i'm breast feeding most of the time (giving breastmilk in a bottle the rest of the time) its hard to know if he's getting more then 32 oz or not. I personally don't think he is getting 32 oz but I dont know.

there is a j&j gel that i use its the lavandar stuff....we love it. Just make sure you warm it up bfore you us it. I leave mine in the baby wipe warmer on top of the wipes so it doesn't get too warm. it's great.

Amelia will lay there for hours and let me rub on her...but when it comes to changing her diaper...uhhh it's over!

I rub all down her back and her arms and legs. i put a little on her chest and tum. I dont' do it around the neck though...but it's up to you.

hey!!!

Don is on a nightly scheduale.... i give him a johnsons bedtime bath! The bath usally is as warm as a baby can have it! (I have the therm that tells if its to hot or not!) Anyhow i let him kinda play for a while to get him relaxed! So about 8:15 i probably take him out! After that i massage his body down with johnsons bedtime lotion! I rub his body neck to toe! Afterword i cream up his tooshie and dress him in jammies! After that i nurse him while in the rocker. Most the time he'll go right down though sometimes i have some difficulties! Once hes a asleep he'll sleep 6-7hours before having a middle of the night snack and then after that he'll sleep another 5-6hours before waking me up for the day! The thing is though he barely naps during the day and when he does he'll nap 15 mins cat naps! im not sure if thats why he sleeps longer at night? hope you can uses some of this!! oo be very consistant.. Make sure that you do this at the same time everynight so his body will adjust. I know that the first few days to weeks can be tough! But once he gets used to it it should help and be easier! good luck
