My grandfather was diagnosed last month and I guess because we are so close he didn"t want me to know until he was ready to tell me. But, of course my mom did. But, even she wont give me a lot of information, like not telling me much is supposed to make me feel better. All she focuses on is that the doctors say even though he is 72 his health is of a 45 year old, he'll live a long time. I need more than that!

She mentioned a treatment he had, a "seed" or "bean" but into his body to attack the cancer. But once again that's all I know. Can anyone recommend a website that is legite that could help me educate myself better? Why is everyone so hush, hush? Is there something they don't want me to know right now? Is it his age that could really prohibit he's longevity.

Here are some sites that might give you some more information:

http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factshe et/Detection/early-prostate

"Seed implantation -- otherwise known as "brachytherapy" -- refers to the placement of radioactive material into tissues. Prostate brachytherapy refers to utilizing a minimally invasive technique to place radioactive sources (contained within a metallic casing) directly into the prostate.....The advantage to this approach of delivering radiation is the ability to accurately deliver a high dose of radiation directly into the prostate while minimizing the radiation dose to the nearby tissues and organs. Patients are usually discharged from the hospital within hours of the procedure, and patients return to normal function within several days..."

Sounds like his chances are very good, hopefully you can do a little less worrying. The seeds work very well; I know two people who had that kind of therapy and they are fine several years later.
Keep us posted!

Hi
I see you are in Atlanta...GO FALCONS or How Bout Them Dawgs! I am from GA too, and my father had prostrate cancer 9 years ago. He went through chemo and the "bean" thing. Your Grandfather has taken good care of himself and this should be a big plus for him. I do hope everything turns out well for him. My father battled colon cancer later on and I lost him last year. He was 72 years old. Check out WebMD...its where I go to find any medical info......Prayers for your Grandfather! Smile

Hi
I say hats off to your grandfather! The man is working out and if he feels up to doing things, leave him alone! So many people sit idle and allow themselves to wallow in pity! I think its a wonderful thing he has such a positive attitude and is keeping up with his routine. They say POSITIVE ATTITUDE makes a world of difference.........If he did not feel up to exercising or anything else, the family would know it! GO GRANDFATHER! We are cheering for you! Cool
