Q: Mono Or Something Else?

OK, so about a week ago my throat started hurting. I couldn't see back there well enough to know what it looked like. The first prescription I got was for Amoxicillin to treat a sinus infection, but after three days, that had done nothing. I went back and they did a strep test (rapid), and it was negative. The doctor asked if I had been exposed to mono, and I said I didn't know of anyone around me who had it. He the prescribed Omnicef saying it may be an infection resistant to the penicillin family of drugs. I'm not aware of any change in my throat toward improvement. At first only one side was swollen badly, but now both are similar. There are these white/yellowish bumps on my tonsils which i observed by shining a light back there, and I took a couple pictures to document how they change for the next few days. I don't feel tired, but I was told to take Aleve with Pseudoephedrine to keep my eustachian tubes open so I don't get an ear infection, as an ear ache was one of my original complaints. The ear ache is gone, but the throat is as painful as ever.

Another symptom I have experienced is random periods of fever. I will feel fine most of the time, but sometimes I will start to feel very warm and begin to sweat, even in an air conditioned room.

I also have a cough and some sinus drainage. Is this normal with mono?

Any advice? Should I go back and get tested for mono or just take the same precautions as one who has it?

Well, I went to the doctor yesterday afternoon and they gave me a quick test and it turns out I was positive for Mono.

The doctor gave me a cough syrup containing Codeine and a note excusing me from work for a week. She also told me to stop taking the antibiotics as they would only slow down recovery.

For the record, up to 10% of the European population does not oxidize Codeine, so it either doesn't work at all or had very little effect. I have not experienced any relief with it. I told the nurse this when I called back and she said it took a few days for pain medicine to get in your system. Is that not rubbish? Instead of trying something else, they told me to take twice the dose.
