Human chorionic gonadotropin, or HCG, is produced during pregnancy. HCG can be detected by blood test eight to eleven days after ovulation. HCG maintains the corpus luteum, which is responsible for the production of progesterone during early pregnancy. There is quite a range of what is considered "normal" HCG levels. In about 85-90% of all pregnancies, HCG levels will double every two to three days. Lower HCG levels may indicate either a miscalculated day of conception, ectopic pregnancy, or miscarriage. However,a perfectly healthy pregnancy may also indicate low HCG levels. Some fertility drugs containing HCG may also affect the HCG levels. However, you may consult your gynecologist for more details and for help in monitoring the progress of your early pregnancy.
