For the past 3 or 4 months I have had throat tightness. I have been to the hospital twice, because it feels like I'm going to die, and my throat is closing. I was reassured when I went to a GI Doc and they did an endoscope and now a barium swallow. They found MILD esophogitis and mild gastritis (infection in stomach). I have been on protonix for over 3 months for GERD. This throat tightness happened out of nowhere...and has continued. I am worried that it's something else that's more serious...my regular MD wants to send me to get tests done for my thyroid, thinking they MAY be swollen. Is there anyone who has had similar symptoms and is this curable? I tend to think it's NOT reflux...I take mylanta, tums...etc...and it does not go away. I sometimes get a burning feeling, but only on the right side of my throat (esop.). I am depressed and feel like I will NEVER get better!

Please help Confused MNB

tightness in the throat
sounds like what I am going thru. I have gerd and gastritis also..mostly caused from diet coke or some other carbonated beverage. sounds like the reflux is doing a number on you too. Cut out the carbonated beverages and keep your protonix going, that should really help you. And maybe try relieving some stress you may have been having. I am getting mine under control. It is a combination of a few things also, a chronic sinus infection. check with the doc though..good luck!

I also got the tighness in my throat. Felt like someone had two hands around my throat and were gently squeezing. I thought for sure it was a tumor in my throat. I went for the barium swallow testing, and they said it was acid reflux. Been on prilosec for about 6 months now, and no longer get the throat tightness. It also helps the palpitations, which I've had for years, but never knew what caused it.

ive experience all these t0o!!! bt just like yours, doctors think i just have gerd. one prescribe me prednisone, antibiotic for my red and slightly swollen throat and antacid, prilosec.
he told me that if ever i wont be well, hell perform another test to see my thyroid status. so what i did was to find another doctor. same thing, he said its a stress-related disorder. my test was all normal.
so i guess all we have to do if ever it occurs again is to have a good relaxation technique.
