Q: My Nathan - Still Sick

My little Nate now has a lot of green poop. We followed the Nurse Practioners orders to clean him out and per doctor's/nurse's orders, still have to give him Myralex and Exlax at night. Since "his cleansing" he has been having stomach cramps, has been throwing up every other day, complains of feeling tired and for the past two days has had extremely green poop that is very mushy. I called his nurse and he is going in for an xray tomorrow. If he is still clogged up, she said that a more aggressive treatment is needed for him..which means more of this medication that is seemingly making him very ill and tired. She also told me that he is probably pooping out bile because it may be working too quickly. If that's the case, why in the heck do I want to treat him more aggressively?? I will seek a second opinion if that is her suggestion. Seeing my son go through this hell is just not fun.

I just wish that my child didn't have this problem. I hope that it gets fixed within the next few months before little Brian/Bryan arrives. Nathan turns 4 in August and will not be able to attend a preschool until his poop problem gets under control.

aww that sucks, i would def seek another dr if thats the case, there are sooo many options on what to do for that problem. And those might be too harsh. ive never heard of any one getting sick from any of em though but still it can happen. I dont think it will be quite cured in 4 mths but more under control, it takes a while to get them back to normal, once they are cleaned out then u take time to make sure they stay that way or ur back at square one.

awww hun, I hope things start looking more positive for you soon. I know how horrible it is seeing your children sick.

You must be finding it all pretty stressful what with trying to get things together for new baby too. I hope the xrays give you some good news and little nate is getting better. Definitely seek a second opinion if you need to, it cant do any harm and it will make you feel much better about the final decision you make into your litttle boys care.

The pregnancy seems to be going alright. Thanks. I posted in the pregnancy forum about my horrible insomnia. I am very hormonal and every little thing seems to bug me. I can barely walk up the stairs and feel like a little old woman. Apart from that, my baby is very active and healthy so I shouldn't complain too much.

I will probably ask to see the specialist and not the nurse practitioner for Nate's next appt in a few weeks. I don't think it will be cured in four months, either:( The nurse did say that it will take him a while to get back to normal, too. I still wonder if all of our moves, combined with his extreme dairy intake and my digestive issues (genetics) caused this issue. He really wasn't that bad before our move to Ohio when he was almost two. At that time, he got a little worse. It became really bad when we moved to WA state and our living style was drastically reduced. He was really never happy there. At least he seems happy now in Idaho and we are doing what we can to rid this awful thing. Stability is just so important for kids!!! We are hoping to find a house to buy within the next month (more stress, huh?), so we don't have to move for A long time after Brian/Bryan is born. I also don't want to move again for a while because Nate has just been through too much. We have put him through hell from all of our various moves. I do believe that it has probably played some role on his system.

We moved so much because my husband was in a .PH.D program in OH but dropped out. Then we moved back home to WA state to be near family. Found out that we could never really afford a home there if I didn't work full time so we moved to Idaho because my husband got a good job. I am so tired of moving!!! Some of you can relate.

Sorry, I am just rambling because the whole issue is stressful and I am surviving on a little less than three hours of sleep!

yeah im sure the move kinda put a damper on him getting better etc. I would definately see a specialist that has dealt with this type of problem they know better ways of dealing and helping with it rather then the nurse practitioner. I would try and put more fiber and less dairy in his diet at least until he is cleaned out. Then after that you can gradually put it back in and maybe keep him on a fiber supplement or metamucil or something. But i would definately seek a specialist i think you will have better results with them.

The nurse practioner is a "specialist" who deals with it all the time. We currently go to a pediatric gastroent. office at a pretty well known hospital so that is all she does. I no longer give him a lot of dairy. I will probably ask to see one of the specialist doctors instead of the NP. She may do this all the time, but I still want that second opinion from someone a little more qualified.

At least I am going to the right office. We were going to just a regular pediatrician for over a year and that didn't help at all.

oh yeah regular pediatricians arent to bright, they convinced my parents it was all psychological and had me seeing a shrink and stuff, made my life a living hell since they never saw a specialist. But im over all that now and fine and dandy but i wishe they knew teh resources that are available .

I am sooo sorry to hear that .Nate is still sick!!!!!!!!!!! I don't blame you for wanting a 2nd opinion or even a 3rd opinion. Maybe this person does know what she is doing but I too believe in a 2nd opinion, tests and x-rays. I sure hope you get some answers soon and he gets to feeling better! Keep us posted.
