Q: Scared... Amenorrhea... Help Please Several Questions

For years I've mentioned to the OB when I'd go in that I hadn't had a period in years, they'd ask why, I'd say I didn't know, I thought it might be the birth control pills, and they would say nothing.

I was on ortho-novum 35 for about 16 years then microgestin the last 2.

No period in YEARS, at least 7.

Thought the doctors would tell me it was a problem, so I didn't worry about it.

And I've read various things on the internet that birth control pills can cause amenorrhea, plus the BC hand outs ay period can skip, another reason why I didn't worry about it.

One Dr. last year had me take a blood test, she said if it came out fine it was probably the pill.

I even told my new OB about it, after being off the pill for 9 weeks and still no period. He just told me last week that it's not normal, should have been getting some periods, at least light ones.

SO now they gave me progesterone to try to induce bleeding.

2X since I stopped my pills my breasts got sore, and I had cramps. no bleeding.

So... I need to know

#1 can amenorrhea happen or not from prolonged use (18 years) on the birth control pills I was on? Stopped getting periods after around 9-11 years.

*2 Is it true that women sometimes have amenorrhea coming off of the pill?

#3 did my soreness and cramps mean anything?

#4 I had a painful simple cyst (5CM diameter) they did an ultrasound for a while ago. No mention of anything else going on in my ovaries, though now I don't trust them to have said anything. Would this indicate other fertility problems?

#3 what does this mean? I am terrified this might mean I am infertile. Sad

Welcome to ehealth.

That just doesn't sound normal to me. How old are you if you don't mind me asking? Are you currently trying to conceive?

Did you tell your new doctor about the fact that it has been so long since you had a period? Or how long you have been taking bc? She may just think that the missing af is caused by you coming off the bc.

Since they have put you on the progesterone to induce bleeding, have you had any bleeding?

I would have to get a second opinion if I were you, that just doesn't make any sense.

Unfortunately I have Kaiser. Not easy to get a second opinion. I am 34. Yes, went off birth control pills because trying to conceive. Haven't had periods since I was 25 or 26. yes, I did tell my (same) doctor a year ago that I hadn't had a period in years, and he didn't say anything- same as all the rest! Until last week.

Just started on day 5, I have to wait another 12-15 days to find out if bleeding can be induced. but, my understanding is if I do this does not mean I'm ovulating.

Wow,
I can't imagine being ignored by doctors like that. I'm sorry you have had to deal with that. To me, that just doesn't sound normal to not have a period for that long. But then again, maybe the bc did have an affect on it. Also is there any possibility of early menopause that runs in the family?

As far as the ovulating goes, if you do start af, there is a chance that you will start to ovulate. Two good ways to find out if you are ovulating is by charting your basal body temperature and using ovulation predictor kits. Both you can get at your local pharmacy.

I wish the best of luck to you!

I also wanted to say that the getting pregnant forum is more active than this one, you might get some more info over there.

Keep us posted.
