Q: Heart palpitations
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 13th, 2007
I recently have been having heart palpitations only at rest. I also feel the heartbeat in my throat. I normally drink 20-40 oz. of coffee everyday. The past week I have not had much coffee at all. Maybe, 20 0unces all week. I have been under stress at work since we are going through a conversion.

I am wondering can it be my heart even though I had all the test done in Feb of this year and all was negative? Can problems occurr at anytime with your heart if it is healthy?

According to the symptoms you report (feeling heart palpitations only at rest, feeling the heartbeat in the throat) plus a history of being under stress... and given that all cardiology medical tests were OK... you could be experiencing some kind of anxiety disorder...probably panic attacks or hypochondria. Many heart diseases can occur suddenly but they appear so only from the outside. In fact, every heart disease has an organic substrate that requires time to develop and to cause a “sudden” manifestation. The purpose of cardiologist's medical tests’ is to reveal those organic changes of the heart when the symptoms occur... or even before symptoms can occur. For example, heart attacks occur suddenly but the organic changes of the heart (atherosclerotic plaques in the coronary arteries) need years to develop and reach the levels necessary for a heart attack to happen. In your case, all the tests were negative which means that the problem is probably not in your heart but in your head.
