I am in my 40's and recently had cystocele/rectocele done. I was very curious, of course, and used a mirror to check my healing progress. That is when I discovered.....I never knew what a vagina really looked like. I told my doctor and embarressingly asked her some questions:
*are those polyps I see or do we just have things like that on/in vaginal canal? she said.. yes our vaginal canal looks like that
*what is this thing? She said.. it is where the urine comes out..

I had thought our urine came out at the top. According to dr. it comes out of vaginal canal with the use of this 'organ' that has a hole in it.
Okay, i am totallyl grossed out. I wondered if the Internet has a good zoomed in photo of what the vaginal canal should look like.

Females urinate from the urethral opening, a very small hole located
between the clitoris and the vaginal opening, and surrounded by the
vaginal lips called the labia majora.

at the end of your clitoris there is a small hole that is where your urine comes out. The shaft on your clitoris is called your urethral.
I hope this helps..

Well, you got it half right.

The urethral opening is between your clitoris and your vaginal opening, and is contained by the labia minora. Labia majora grows hair on it and doesn't hang down, labia minora are what are typically called "lips" and are the fleshy bits that hang down.

What appears to be a hole at the outer tip of the clitoris is not actually a hole, it is your clitoris retracted behind the clitoral hood. The clitoral hood is similar to a foreskin and when a woman becomes aroused the clitoris swells and emerges from the hood.

On this website there is a detailed sketch. You can also do a google images search for "female anatomy" which is how I found this link for you.

The vaginal canal is internal and I highly doubt you were able to see it with a mirror (unless you had a mirror while getting a PAP smear), and it is very unlikely you'll be able to find a picture on the net.

Neither does mine Smile

But it is true that the clitoris is not exactly like a miniature penis, and urine does not come out of the clitoris.

yeah, i don't like the way people describe the clitoris by saying it is like a 'miniature penis'. what a bad way to educate people about female anatomy Smile

i'm glad someone else has a 'shy' clit. it's never bothered me or been a problem sexually, but just recently i have heard people saying about it the clitoris emerging from the hood and i began to think i was the only person whose didn't. phew!

when i was a kid used to think my pee came out of my clitoris... because the way the hood hangs it kinda looks like an opening. it's sad how little women know about their bodies!

I bet we all thought that when we were kids, since it's much more visible than the actual urethra! Anyway, it's never too late to learn! =)

The reason why some say that the clitoris is like a mini penis is because the clitoris develops from the same embryonic tissue as the penis.

As an embryo/fetus a male and female both start the same. Basically, at a certain point, if the male hormone kicks in then the fetus develops into a male, otherwise a female. The same embryonic tissue will either become a penis or a clitoris. The same embryonic tissue will either become foreskin or a clitoral hood, etc. It's really quite interesting.

Did you know when a male baby elephant fetus is developing its testosterone levels are high enough that they can be detected in the mother's blood system?!?

...... I watch too much National Geographic...... hehe.
