Everyone Keeps Firing My Wife!!! Posted: 05-11-07 15:34pm
I have been married to my wife for 10
years the first 5 years of our marriage
she could hold a job and work. we moved
around a few times for my work and we
moved back to my home state. We have been
back since 2003 and since then she cannot
keep a job to save her life. The first
time she was fired they even gave her a
letter of reference and made it clear it
was because of the epilepsy however the
state EEOC couldnt prove it so they
dismissed the case it was she said they
said. she has since worked probobly 20
jobs only 1 of which she was able to hold
on to for 10 months before they outsourced
to india. and she has once again been
fired for "not learning qucikly enough"
what do we do. this is close to destroying
us not only financially but spiritually as
well. we are desperate. where can we get
help? can she apply for dissability? she
doesnt want to she wants to work. no one
will give her a chance to learn. its
either you learn this in a week or 2 or
your fired. she has had brain surgery
twice for hell sakes. why cant anyone just
give her a chance?

Epilepsy And Work, Or Lack of Posted: 05-25-07 12:36pm
Sorry to hear about your wife. Some work
places just don't understand. Just b/c a
person has a disability (no matter if it's
diabetes or Seizures), it doesn't mean
that the company should "get rid" of this
person. I have Seizures myself and I have
held Marketing positions in the workplace.
I've had seizures on the job.
My last job I had (before I quite to have
kids) I worked with a lady who was the
President or CEO's Secretary. She had
Grand Mal seizures (the company knew
this). This company is different. They
look at what the person can do and work
around what Medical issues the person had.
The company was "Orchid Technology"
(don't know if they're still around or
not). This company (computer-type
company) had several of its' employees
that had medical issues (CEO's Secretary
had Seizures, Marketing Assistant (me) had
Seizures; one of the Sales guys had
deslexia and had to dictate letters to a
cassete b4 giving to secretaries to type).
This doesn't help you much, I agree. I
understand your frustration. Companies
need to be educated on what people (with
Medical Issues) have overcomed! Just b/c
we have some type of Med issue that may
require either some understanding or some
extra time off work (for doctors
appointments or what ever), we have a lot
to offer. If companies could flex a bit
(for doctors appointments or procedures),
they would find out that employing People
with Medical Issues could be ver
profitable for them.
I know you've probably hear this a million
of times; but, keep a positive additude
and never give up.
Maybe b4 getting a job, your wife might
want to disclose her medical issues (at
time of initial meeting). She might want
to let them know that just b/c she has
Epilespy; it won't have her. In other
words, She's just like anyone else and
deserves a chance to prove herself.
I had a boss who once told me never to
expose your medical issues to anyone in
the workplace b/c it would get you fired!
I look at it as I have Seizures, if I had
a seizure @ work, I sure don't want anyone
to stick a spoon down my thoat, so that I
don't swallow my tong (this is an old
theory - when a person has a seizure, they
could swallow their tongue. So they would
put a spoon in the mouth (of the person
having the seizure). This, supposidly,
would keep the tongue in place). Some
people still believe this to be true. 4
this reason alone, I would tell any
"Potential boss 2 be". I would also
follow it up by stating my qualifications
for the job would be an asset to the
company. I would state if the company
could except my med issues and allow time
off for doctors and medical procedures;
they would gain an excellent employee! IT
would benefit the company.
Good luck to you both! Keep you in
prayers! Don't ever give up on praying!
God works in mystereous ways!

Try getting help
through Vesid or a organization like it.
They will help evaluated your wife, to
find her stong points. Vesid will then
help train her to get an hold a job
suitable for her condition. If she's
ready, willing and able to work, then
they'll help her do it.
