Q: TMJ + jaw will not close
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 11th, 2007
I was diagnosed as having TMJ Disorder, but wasn't really given any treatment due to no pain and I've become used to my jaw being really tense. I often have to stretch my jaw open just to loosen things up, and it cracks when eating harder foods.

Recently I accidentally opened by jaw way too wide and way to fast and it clicked on the left and developed into some really severe pain which is now gone, but now my lips hang open and don't meet when I try to relax my face. So I find myself in this terribly uncomfortable place trying to constantly put my lips together, I even bought tape and put it on my lips to see if I could just get them closed while I'm in my apartment but that didn't make it more comfortable. What can I do, is there a surgery and wouldn't it take years? Is there anything I can do in the near future to just get my lips to meet together?

Given your description, you could be experiencing some type of jaw luxation but that has to first be confirmed by an oral surgeon.
