Q: Sharp pain during bowel movement + bloody stools
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 9th, 2007
Hi

For the past half year i've been experiencing a really sharp pain during a bowel movement. During this i've seemed to noticed blood stains on the tissue (bright red except for yesterday when there was quite a discharge of dark). Let me stress that the pain is very sharp and seems to be located right at the tip of the anus. I'm thinking it's the cause of fissures but i thought that it heals over time (although i do go to the bathroom constantly so i'm thinking i'm tearing the scars over and over again).

p.s. my bowel movement is pretty regular, there have been occasions when they were watery like and fairly hard but on the whole pretty regular.

Is this bowel cancer?

thanks and regards
pat

Colon Cancer Answer A2746
Blood in the stool should be taken very seriously because it could be a sign of a very serious disease such as colon cancer. Fortunately, colon cancer is not as frequently the reason for blood in the stool as other condition such as haemoids, fissures, infections etc. According to your symptoms (pain in the anus during bowel movement), the blood and pain could be originating from a fissure placed on the anal opening. Healing an anal fissure goes a lot easier if you have softer stools. Nonetheless, you'll have to visit your primary health provider for a physical examination in order to inspect the area. An abdominal surgeon can be consulted, too, if necessary.
