Q: Concern About Size of Kidneys

For nearly four years now I have been having problems with recurring UTI. In early 2005 I underwent a kidney ultrasound and IVP. The sizes of my kidneys, as far as I could tell, were normal (right kidney: 11.2x5.2cm; left kidney: 12.6x5.3cm), and my creatinine and uric acid were also within normal range (creatinine: 49.34 UMOL/L; uric acid: 0.27MMOL/L). The doctor suspected that there might have been a stone, but we never saw it. He said there was another test which could be done but it would be invasive and, because of my age, we both decided to forgo it. Earlier this year I had another UTI, and a kidney ultrasound was ordered. My concern is the decreased size of my kidneys; the right kidney measured 9.2x3.5cm and the left kidney measured 8.6x3.8cm. My creatinine and uric acid are both still within normal range (creatinine: 67.9 UMOL/L; uric acid: 204.0 UMOL/L).

My doctor assured me that I am fine. He did say that if the pain came back I should go see him again. My question is, will my kidneys continue to decrease in size? When should I start to worry?

I should tell you that I have a mitral valve prolapse and that I took some allergy medications for several months last year, along with some antibiotics and cough medicines, all of them prescribed by my doctors.

I would really appreciate any help. Thank you!

I doubt that your kidneys will continue to decrease. The doctor assured you that you are fine. But if you get the slightest pain you should call your doctor immediately just to be on the safe side.

Good luck, Keep us posted!
