Medicaid & Baby's Last Name Posted: 05-08-07 12:28pm
i was talking to a friend & she asked
me a really good question.
since my boyfriend & i are not married
& i'm getting medicaid as a single
parent, do i have to give our baby MY last
name? what happens if we give them HIS
last name & he makes good money? not
enough for insurance coverage, but enough
for us three to live a nice life style.
just wondering.

I know here to put a child on Medicaid you
have to give them the name of the father
so they can try to get him to pay. Or
that is how it used to be. But it may be
different from state to state
I think you should give your baby the
father's name if you and he want it.

Thats what I thought.. If the baby has his
last name theyll go after him for child
support.

i was not married when i had my first
child and gave her his last name and was
on medicaid and they never went after him
for support. with my son i had to request
they go after his father for support and
that took a year for the state to just
get things going.

It may vary from state to state. I would
check into your child support laws. In
Illinois, it doesn't matter whose last
name the child has. My stepdaughter has
her mother's last name (and her mother is
on medicaid) and once paternity was
established, they came after my husband
for child support.
Since you two are married, I wouldn't
think it would matter whose last name the
child had. You are still a single parent
regardless of whose last name the child
carries and his income should have no
bearing on you getting medicaid. But
again, things like this vary from state to
state. You might try checking your
state's health department website and see
if there are any requirements on there.
Good luck to you all!
