Oral Conditions I'm Very Confused/upset About
Posted: 05-07-07 19:00pm

In seventh grade I contracted mono-nucleosis from a schoolmate, and my tonsils have never been the same since.

I started dating someone when I was 16 who was having problems with his glands, and soon after I was having the same symptoms. I went to the emergency room after a while because my tonsils had become so enlarged and infected that I could barely breathe or swallow. The doctors said I had mono...again. So, I deduced that since mono stays dormant in your system forever after you get it (is this true?) that mine was triggered again since the person I was seeing at the time had an infection in his glands/tonsils. I was treated and the infection went away.

A few months later, I was dating someone new and my tonsils were inflamed and spotted with white gunk once again. My boyfriend acquired mono from me, as did a friend of mine who I had oral contact with. They were treated, and my friend actually got jhondis from how sick he became from my mono.

About a year and a half to two years passed, and my throat started acting up again. I was with yet another boyfriend and on one particular night he asked for oral sex. I should have refused due to the condition my throat was in, but I complied. Needless to say, within days he started feeling sick. He was puking and feeling light headed, and noticed a green/yellow secretion coming from his urethra. He was tested and he was positive with gonorrhea. This was crazy to me because I have been consistent with my STD tests and have been negative on everything.

I was re-tested after this news, and everything was clean...except my throat, which tested positive for gonorrhea. My boyfriend at the time and I received our shots and antibiotics and were soon treated and better.

That brings us to today. I have been having problems with my voice and throat lately, mainly due to too much partying and not enough sleeping. I have been checking my tonsils on a weekly basis because I have been so worried about getting those little white puss spots again. I checked today at work and lo-and-behold, there they are. My glands are swelling at this very moment, and my voice today is a LOT worse than it's been in a while.

I'm very worried because I don't know why this keeps coming back. I have been reading about tonsillitis online and I often see gonorrhea pop up with it. Are these two closely related? And what is my best bet? I want so badly to have them removed but I'm not sure if that will take care of the problem.

Also, I've very recently (and on more than one occasion) had sexual contact with another person and I am beyond freaked out that he will contract something from me..

Please help, as this is greatly afflicting me. Sad

I think your best bet is to talk to your doctor more about it. He or she would be the one who is the most capable of telling you what's going on and if removing your tonsils is a good idea.

Doctors used to pull tonsils out at the drop of a pin. They stopped in recent decades because it turns out that if you don't have tonsils, there's one specific type of cancer you can get that people with tonsils can't.

Personally, if I were you, I'd be banging down my doc's doors demanding the annoying things be removed! They've caused you more harm than good.

well, i would say see a doctor and get tested for strep throat and gonorrhea. you could have had gonorrhea and the doctor thought it was strep and treated you for strep with an antibiotic that doesn't cure gonorrhea so you still had gonorrhea and could have been passing it around whenever you gave oral. a sore throat looks like its red irritated etc.. wether its either infection so, a doctor wouldn't routinely test for a std in your throat. usually doctors think strep when a person says they have a sore throat and just test for strep and certain antibiotics work for certain diseases or infections and if you don't finish the meds it can just suppress symtoms for awhile but, it makes the infection angry and it keeps growing.
some people have geographical or pitted tonsils that have grooves in them which is scarring from many infections as a child. things like food particles can get trapped in the grooves and cause irritation and a sore tonsil that can have white material collected in the grooves. gargling can help but as always a doctor should be seen to diagnose any possible problems. hope this helps... Wink
