Q: Ovarian Cysts And Bad Doctors

I've been seeing doctors (ob-gyn and Family practice) for sypmtoms that I have been having. Two years ago, they said I had cysts. I had a normal pap and I didn't worry. Since then , I've had pains that wont go away, really dry skin/acne and more hair forming on my face and body. I went to my gyn and she did and ultra sound. There was a cyst on my left ovary and she didn't address any of my other symptoms. I went back 3 moths later and that cyst grew from 1.9 cm to 3.9cm and they found another one on my right ovary. both have been causing me some discomfort. I've been feeling tired, sick and my skin has gotten worse. I asked her if there is a blood test she could do to check my hormone levels, and she said it wouldn't help and that it was not really necessary. My husband and I have been trying the have a baby for two years now and I was not happy with the way this doctor didn't seem to care that I was worried about my ovaries and fertility. I asked her about surgery because of the pains and she said that I would lose my ovary if I did. Now, I am worried that my symptoms are showing that there is something more going on and it could have been taken care of by now. The first doctor who found the cysts two years ago was treating me for an ITU that I didn't have! She had me taking cipro for four days and called me to tell me to stop taking it because I didn't have an infection. She said I probably had kidney stones, which a CT scan showed otherwise. I've been going back and forth with these symptoms and not one of these doctors has taken blood to find out what is going on with me! i'm also getting these lumps that start off red and end up dark, on my face that wont go away. Intercourse is sometimes painful and I feel bloated all of the time. I can't sleep, my sides ache and I fear that I wont be able to have a baby because the doctors took too long to help me. I know about the different types of cysts, the symptoms for PCOS and I know about the "waiting" period regarding the cysts that are smaller than 6cm. But how do I know there isn't something more going on? Why would a doctor say that my cysts wont be a problem for me trying to get pregnant? WHy would she say that they should not be painful when I told her that they are?! I don't even know if I am ovulating every month. I am getting a period, but I know that it doesn't mean that I'm releasing an egg. What do I do?!
I am frustrated and worried.

I am sorry you are having such a rough time. I would suggest choosing another ob/gyn if you have been trying for a child that long. They can do an infertility workup and make sure nothing is wrong. Even if it just puts your mind at ease, it's def worth it.

Good luck!!!

I agree. YOu need to see a different doctor. I would not let any doctor that told me I would lose an ovary due to an operation anywhere near me. I had surgery when I was 14 to remove a cyst because it was causing me pain. I was told going in that I may lose my ovary, because she wasn't positive what everything was going to look like going in, but I didn't lose my ovary or either tube. It is way to harsh to make that assumption.

As for effecting your fertility, some cysts can inturupt your cycle and cause you not to ovulate. But many women continue to have a cycle while they have cysts and it does not effect their pregnancy. However, If you have activly been ttc (temping, using opk's) for over 2 years, it is time to see a fertility specialist.

The additional symptoms that you describe do sound like hormonal issues. They could be from the cysts themselves or they could be causing the cysts. Only a doctor will be able to tell you that for sure.

Good luck and keep us posted!
