First off, I am not a big guy. I weigh 185 now at age 35 and I weighed 172 when I was in HS. I had a 30 waist than, got a 32 now.

I had been having some wierd feelings in my chest for a while, but figured they were the seasonal things. I got concerned when I chipped a tooth in my sleep from grinding my teeth so much. I took a BP test at a Kroger and it registered 190/100. That scared the crap out of me so I went to a doc who took my BP and told me to go to the ER. Waiting around the ER stressing out for 1 hour I got in and my BP managed to jump to 210/110. Freaked they make me wait to see a doc for another hour, the doc told me that I would be fine if I would calm down. That I had no symptoms of anything more serious yet, and that there was no damage done to me that could not be repaired. W/o meds he took my BP again and it dropped to 170 over 100. He gave me some meds and 45 minutes later it dropped to 153.

The last few days since I have been to the ER it has gone up and down. At one point it said 110 (makes me question the machine I got) and once it got to 170 again.

I am not sure what I am asking if anything. More, what do you think of what is going on... and how bad off am I? Not sure if I really want to know, cuz it causes me stress which is what I think is the reason I am in the condition I am in.

I have knocked off my bad habits. Eating almost no fat and little salt and took cafenine out all together. In the long run it may help, but my problem I feel is stress. The food and cokes may not help, but I chipped a damn tooth grinding my teeth in my sleep (and btw, the dentist who fixed my chipped tooth said I had perfect teeth and no cavities).

I am going to go see the doc tommorow and have tests done, but I think it is a pretty safe bet I know what my problem is.

I can relate in the sense that I am not a big girl either. I am 30 years old. Don't drink, don't smoke & eat pretty decent. I just discovered that I have what they are calling "pre-hypertension" (it was about 140/89) I do not want to take any meds. I don't know what else I can do to change my lifestyle! I have a very stressful job, which I think is the cause of this. I work in Customer Service at an insurance company.
Sounds scary what you're going through. Are you still taking meds? What else have you tried???

I think you nailed it on the head.
Stress is a killer.
You must find ways to relax and lower your stress levels. Think in terms of hypnosis (you can get cd's on the web), music, yoga (don't laugh. Yoga is amazing) etc.
All the healthy food isn't going to help if you are walking around stressed out.
I am not just preaching to you, btw. I am also a "type A" person and get stressed alot. When I did yoga I found it to be wonderful. Forces you to take an hour out of your crazy week and be calm and peaceful.
Good luck!

Stress Relief
I agree that stress can be a major cause of hypertension. And the best way to deal with stress is naturally. There's really no effective drug treatment for it.
Lynn, I think recommended relaxation CDs and yoga. Both make good sense but for the relaxation CDs you should try something called Breatheasy. This is far better than any relaxation tape because it's not passive. While relaxing to the music you follow a slow breathing track. So it relaxes and gives you a breathing method that's proven to lower blood pressure. It really works.
There's a lot of other things you can do for stress, like yoga, but this info is everywhere. Not many people know about Breatheasy.
