Q: Heart Rate Question

Hi I'm 19 and I've started going to the gym and working out again. I go once a week and I've never been a fanatic or very fit. I'm working out just to tone up my body and shift a bit of weight. When I do work out, my heart rate gets really high, normally about 180-190bpm and it's rarely below 160 even if I go slow. I heard that if the heart rate gets to 200bpm the heart can just stop, is this true or just a rumour? How can I lower my hr when working out?
