Q: How to interpret a HIDA scan
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 1st, 2007
Now that I think about it, I remember the tech telling me that I should see some squiqly lines which probly would have indicated the isotope was entering my small intestine. I don't recall seeing anything like that. I'm almost positive that it was all in my stomach.
The techs didn't tell me anything and I'm sure my doctor will fill me in, but thought I would ask what it could mean if the isotope did in fact go to my stomach instead of my small intestine.
Thank you!

You have reported:

"Current medical status: Went to the doctor with IBS like symptoms, sent to a Gastro specialist to rule out other issues. He suggested gallbladder. With my family history, birth control history, back pain and other symptoms, this made sense. Had an ultrasound that showed no stones.

Current medical treatment: Went today for a HIDA scan. Was able to watch the scan. At first, I was discouraged because I thought I could see that the gallbladder was working properly. After the CCK injection, I could see the isotope moving from my left side to my right."

You are not qualified to claim that bile from the gallbladder goes into the stomach instead of duodenum at this time. In fact, you can’t see the stomach duringa HIDA scan! You can only see the gallbladder and bile duct... indirectly when filled with contrast. You should consult the doctor for an expert interpretation of the HIDA-scan.
