Q: Back From the Doctor

Alyvia has a viral infection. She has two ulcers in the back of her throat. The doctor said it wasn't a direct result of teething, but because she is teething, she's sticking her fingers in her mouth and got the infection.

I have to give her a combination of children's tylenol (she said infant's is too strong... does that sound right to anyone? Confused), children's benadryl, and mylanta. I mix a teaspoon of each together and give her half a teaspoon every 6-8 hours. Apparently the tylenol is for fever, the benadryl is for her other symptoms, and the mylanta is for her poor throat so she doesn't stop eating and drinking.

If she's still running a fever by .friday, I have to bring her back in.

My poor baby girl! Crying or Very sad

oh, and for the record: her bottom right tooth has completely broken the surface, and her bottom left tooth is starting to push through a little bit too. So she's working on 2 at once. Shocked

we use mylanta for reflux flair ups. please please get mylanta cherry supreme, which is aluminum free. the other mylantas contain aluminum-which is a toxic metal, the "safe" amounts are very controversial, but its best to avoid it if you can, especially if you are vaxing, she gets enough aluminum from vaxes.
hope she gets better soon!

Both of Ava's came out too and it's coming out more and more every day. Wait a couple of days and check it.

Thanks for the positive vibes, ladies! My poor girl definitely needs them. She's never sick, so seeing her feeling bad is hard for me.

Thanks for the warning, .nat! Do you know how long aluminum stays in one's system? She had vacs at her 6 month appointment, and won't have more until she turns a year. We bought the regular mylanta (didn't see this post until after we'd gotten home) because the doc recommended it. Well actually, what she recommended was the plain flavor, since the tylenol and benadryl would both be cherry flavored. But she didn't mention the supreme kind at all so we just grabbed the regular kind. Do you have any links for me to read up on aluminum intake or could you quote some for me? Neutral

.terra: yeah, one just broke the surface. You can see it a tiny bit, but it's not really out yet. I'll definitely snap pics when there's something to show! She doesn't let me look at it hardly at all - I have to make her laugh to get a look at her gums. Laughing

aluminum is a known toxic metal. it builds up in the body over time. Traces Gi specifically said she prescribes the supreme mylanta to babies with reflux because of aluminum toxcicity. i have found many doctors shrug this off and say its not a big deal (like our regular ped-she was clueless), but i have read quite a few studies on metal toxcicity and even our GI agrees.

here are links on the dangers of aluminum:

Aww, poor .aly. I hope she feels better soon!
as for the tylenol....I don't know why infants tylenol would be stronger than childrens tylenol, but infants tylenol is "concentrated" where Children's is not

Thanks for the links, .nat. I'm a bit confused now, though. The information mentioned that we take in aluminum in our water, from using aluminum foil, from drinking products in aluminum cans, excessive use of antacids, etc...

I'm not sure if they mentioned how common this condition is in normal, every-day people without renal problems. I'm not saying I want to knowingly put my child in danger of this toxicity, but is she really in danger of developing a reaction of some sort from taking a mixed medicine over the course of a day or two? (.i'm not arguing, .i'm genuinely curious.)

I guess my question is, as often as people use these products: antacids, foil, drinks in aluminum cans, etc... are there any statistics on what percentage of people develop this toxicity? Or did the information you provide mention it and I missed it? Confused

oh, maybe that was it! Thank you, .mandi! That makes sense. The doctor wanted us to mix the three medications together, so maybe a tablespoon of concentrated tylenol would be stronger than a tablespoon of children's - since you give infant's in drops and children's in a cup. Embarassed Laughing

laura, the issue is, aluminum builds up in the body over time. aluminum is a toxic metal. because we are exposed to so much of it as it is, you should avoid anymore aluminum at all costs, imo. i stick with the mylanta supreme, because i rather be safe than sorry. autistic kids (thats 1 in 150 children in the usa as of 2007) blood tests are positive for metal toxcicity, aluminum being one of them. many go through metal detoxification, and if caught early enough, a reversal of symptoms can occur. this is just an example of metal toxcicity.

Do you have a research article(s) regarding Autistic children and metal toxicity? I would like to read up on this. I need to keep up on this stuff for my job. Are you certain that all the kids that were in the study tested positive for metals or a statistically high percentage? Just curious. I have heard of this before, I just want to know the actual research studies conducted regarding this.

Thank you,

I was going to say the same thing. When we give our babies infants tylenol we give them considerably less then we would if we were giving children's...so a teaspoon of concentrated would be way too much.

that stinks! Hannah had that last week, then Geneva got it at the end of the week. then my husband got it. It was worst for the baby. I only gave her the mylanta and benadryl stuff a few times, since it is just for comfort. I am sorry she has to put up with that! It will be gone soon!

oh no, I understood that .nat! I was just wondering if there were any statistics that indicated how widespread this condition is or maybe how many people out of x will be affected. I hope that makes sense. Confused
