I am a 45 yr old female with a history of breast cancer in the family. My mother and her sister, both survivers. For the past 5 years I have had severely cystic breasts meaning a total of about 20 lumps showing up on sonograms. Constantly changing sizes and locations. My last sonogram was over a year ago due to no longer having insurance. I just went to my gyn and they referred me to have a comprehensive mammo and sono but due to the lack of insurance, I have regrettably put it off. Two days ago my right breast swelled up and became red, hard and Very sore. A different kind of pain than the discomfort I have had in the past with normal PMS swelling and tenderness. My question...I am assuming this is an abscessed cyst in my breast and ideally should be drained by a surgeon. If so, is this a condition that can be treated with antibiotics until I have enough money or insurance to see a surgeon? Can an abscess clear up and go away with meds verses a needle? I realize the importance of an exam and plan to try to get insurance asap, however with the pre-existing med. conditions it has been difficult to find an affordable plan. Any advice would be appreciated.
