Quitting Smoking

I just found out I am pregnant this week
and am trying to quit smoking but I find
myself balling my eyes out at any given
moment when I think about not having one.
Well not all the time just at work. I
work for my CONTROLLING, meddling inlaws
at a VERY small company and the stress is
constantly getting to me. I think in the
morning that I am not going to have one
today and I go to work and the second I
hear their voices trying to medal in my
life I just am flipping untill I have one.
I am trying the Quest step 2 and 3 which
is extra low and No nicotine ones and was
really worried that I am the only one
having this problem. So THank you for
posting all your comments, even though I
am fighting right now not to go smoke and
ofcorse I have tears running down my face
and I really do not know why. Well I
guess I will keep you posted, Glad I found
this site!

Here's the truth of it...quitting in those
conditions puts you at higher risk of
miscarriage. Stress is one of the biggest
reasons people miscarry...not smoking. You
may want to talk to a doctor to see what
he or she recommends. They may suggest
that you try other methods of
quitting...or delay your attempt until
after the first trimester. You have to be
sure the benefits of quitting right now
actually outweigh the risks.
Oh yeah...just a note...as the last person
said...this post is VERY old and I
haven't even been around here for almost
as long.
But...as an update...I miscarried...and
resumed smoking 6 months after quitting. I
have no doubt that I will quit again...I
just need that motivation...and there's
nothing like being preggo to get you
motivated to get healthy. We have now been
trying for about a year and a half...I
just can't wait to have it happen for us!!
Good luck to you...and I hope this helps.

I understand what you all mean, both
sides. I'm 20 weeks on monday, I've smoked
throughout all my pregnancy. I hate doing
it, but I've tried and tried and cried, I
hate myself for it but it is NOT an easy
thing to do. For some people it is, for
some it isn't. I have cut down and I only
smoked between 2-6 people a day. I know
the risks of low birth weight, premature
birth and asthma for my baby but when I
say I've tried everything, I mean
EVERYTHING.
lol! edited to add, obviously didn't read
the last few posts. sorry, didn't realise
it was an old thread.

I know this will offend some and to be
honest I don't care.
Your baby is more important than your
in-laws so instead of "flipping til you
have one" think of your child.
Before anyone tells me how hard it is - I
quit drinking (from alcoholic levels) and
smoking (from around 25-30 per day) on the
same day, cold turkey.
If you put your mind to it you can do it.
go chew some gum if you need to, but
simply do not buy any ciggarettes - if you
don;t have any then you can't smoke them
can you.
Congrats your pregnant, your life as you
knew it ends and you enter a whole new
chapter - leave the crap behind and move
forwards.

Well said .Kia Chewing gum and sucking on
hard candy works some, but finding things
to do to occupy your mind when those mad
cravings come is key.
I smoked for years and years and one day
I just stopped. I had weak moments where
I thought I would die (or someone else
would) if I didn't have a cigarette and I
made it through it. I still have times
where I would like to have a smoke.
What kept me strong and what continues to
keep me strong is that I had a beautiful
baby boy that is healthy, and I want to
keep him that way. Besides, I would rather
spend that $50 a week I would have bought
ciggies with on baby clothes!!!
Good luck quitting

I Still Smoke...

ok, I realize that this is an old foum or
whatever it's called. Anyways, I am only
17 but I am pregnant. I am 13 weeks- just
shy of 14. I smoke. I know it's bad and
eventually I will quit but I haven't
before i got pregnant I smoked 3 packs a
day and if adam a guy that annoyed me came
over i could smoke 6. honestly. I now
smoke like less than a pack a day but when
I go all day without smoking random people
that i know will buy me them because I am
a major b----. i have smoked since I was
twelve it is harder for some people to
quit and as far as low birth weight my
frined kim had two babies (smoked the
enitire time) and had an 8 and a 9 lb
baby. they weren't premature and they are
healthy. So if you don't want to quit then
don't it's better if you do but if not
just avoid smoking around people who will
complain. I do! good luck with whatever
you decide

THats great. I'm glad that she was
fortunate enough to have two healthy
children. Unfortunately, she is in the
minority. And because you know someone who
had a healthy child doesn't mean you will.
I know people who have gotten pregnant
right away....does that mean it worked
that way for me? Nope...I would never wish
an unhealthy child on anyone. I think it
is a shame that someone who will one day
be called a mother can have such
disrespect for the future well being of
her child. It amazes me. I mean, trying to
quit is one thing, Hiding it
because you know its wrong and you simply
don't care enough to stop is another.
It really just makes me want to cry
sometimes.

do you not realize that the people who
complain about your smoking are doing it
because they care
i don't want to turn this into a debate,
i'm just trying to make you understand.
they aren't bickering at you to quit
smoking because they just want something
to b*tch about, they are doing it because
they care! just because your friend had 2
healthy children doesn't mean that you
will! every time you inhale it, it goes
right to your baby, do you want to fill
your childs lungs with smoke?
think about your child before you keep
smoking, put your child first, that's what
a real mother would do.

Hey there, angrymess. Just to let you know
that just because your friends two kids
were born at a great weight doesn't mean
anything. My cousin had a baby 9 months
ago and her baby was 7lbs. 11oz, she
smoked all the way through her pregnancy.
Now this kid has had 4 colds already and
she constantly has a runny nose. Also
think about how hard it is to quit smoking
for you (I'm sure that it is) but think
about the with drawls that your baby is
going to go through when it is born. How
fair is that. It sure seems pretty selfish
if you ask me.
What cracks me up is when you see people
who smoke all during their pregnancy and
then once the baby is born they smoke
outside. I just don't get it.
Please don't think that I am judging you
because I don't know you. This is just my
opinion.

thanks fo rall the input. Although some
were judging it doesnt phase me. I will be
a good mother and hope that all turns out
well. I don't hide from people because I
know it's wrong. I hide because I dont
care to hear their opinion. I have had
lots of friends and enimies that were
pregnant and smoked they turned out fine.
And I know that all pregnancies are
different but I have played it safe and I
miscarried I am at least going to enjoy
myself this time. I am not a promiscuous
person by all means (given my age some
would think) And I am not ignorant. I just
simply believe in what I do. I don't think
people should tell her how horrible it is
that she can't stop smoking because it's
not always as easy as just not buying them
and saying no. Some people handle
addiction worse than others. Just like
pregnancy so you might have been able to
quit drinking and smoking all in the same
day but for others it's different. it is
her body and her life she asked for advice
and opinions and I gave mine, just as you
did. I still firmly believe in what I say.
toodles

umm im pretty sure that nobody called you
a "highly available" (or anything of the
sort) don't put words in peoples mouths.
we're judging, yes. you don't care about
our opinions? then don't post it on a
public forum, because you are going to
hear opinions that you don't like if you
do so.
i guess when your baby is born and is sick
all the time you can run along somewhere
else and complain about it, because we
tried to tell you.

I'm not judging you at all. I smoked when
I was pregnant with my daughter. She was
born 2 1/2 months early. She weighed 2
lbs 7 oz. She was a sickly little kid and
I feel so fortunate that now that she's
almost an adult she is healthy.
Did my smoking cause her to be born
prematurely? I don't know?

Ok well i am a smoker too.
I've cut down from almost a pack a day to
the equivilent to about 3-5 a day. Reason
why i say that is because my fiance allows
me to have a few drags of his cigarette
every once in a while. So i couldnt tell
you excatly how many.
I have a very addictive nature and dont
take well to stress. I honestly believe
that if i didnt allow myself to have those
few puffs a day i most certainly would
have miscarried this child.
And did anyone ever think that harping on
a pregnant woman to quit smoking just
might annoy them enough to want another
one?
Two main reasons why i started smoking!!
1. stress
2. People who annoy me and *** me off!!
I would love to give it up and i hope that
i do but i just wish that people would
back off, stop harping at me and just let
me do what i need to do to get through
this.
This is just how i feel!!

Sweetie, your doing fine. You have
significantly decreased your intake
because you know it can do more harm then
good. That's all were asking, allitle
effort. This was geared toward those who
decided that they do not need to change
their habits because a 'friend' didn't and
was fine. And based off that is giving
people the advice that quitting smoking
isn't necessary. Don't take it personal

What you have done is great!! I agree with
everything MC stated. What people are
saying is not directed towards you, Pixma.
It is when people try to convince
themselves that what they are doing is not
harmful to their babies because other
people have delivered healthy babies.
