Q: Anti-depressant Side Effect Tinnitus

Hi, I developed hypoglycemia earlier this year. Before I found out how to get some relief from the anxiety and low moods by changing my diet (removing refined sugars like colas, white bread etc), I went on Lofepramine which after 5 weeks really was beginning to help. Unfortunately my ears starting ringing and this became such a problem that I asked my doctor to come off the meds. I spent a week at half dose and then stopped for a week. Then my doctor suggested I try another antidepressant but it didn't suit me either. I am trying st John's Wort now.

My problem now really is that after 3 weeks after stopping the Lofepramine my ears still ring and it is beginning to add extra stress thinking that maybe its permenant? It has improved a bit but its still bothering me. Just want it to be quiet again at night to sleep. my sleep also seems disturbed too, I often wake after a few hours feeling panicky, then can't get back to sleep. .I tried looking on the internet but didn't find any evidence of permenant problems like this. Maybe I missed something. Is it just a case of giving it more time to leave my system?

I feel upset because peace and quiet is so important to me.

Wondering if any one knows about this? Thank you for any advice, lots of love Vicki x

The tinnitus could possibly be caused by your medication. A lot of anti-anxiety meds have long lasting side effects. Maybe try to do a bit of google search on side effects and see if it matches your symptoms. Ask your doctor if there's anything he/she can do anything about the tinnitus.

Antidepressants themselves have lots of side effects. If psychotropic meds are not absolutely neccessary, ask your doctor for any alternatives.

Tinnitus is actually a very common condition. Perfectly healthy individuals can experience this.

Depression itself can cause very physical symptoms that's different for everyone. It may also cause factitious evidence due to the depression. I suggest you speak with your doctor about all the physical symptoms you are getting as well as psychological symptoms.

Do you sometimes feel ungrounded or hear or see things? This is not meant to be a intimidating question. You can PM me if you want to talk about this.

I hope you feel better soon.

Hi thank you so much for replying. I had an appointment with my doctor today that was made awhile ago and she was certain that the meds would not cause a permenant problem and would wear off quickly. She even said to go back on it if the St John's Wort didn't work. I also googled it as well and didn't really find any thing. So I feel a little better, she also is now investigating the tinnitus which helps. plus she gave me a small amount of sleeping tabs too when I really have problems sleeping.

I am also now seeing an accupunturist about the tinnitus and anxiety. Hoping that might help.

Many thanks again for the advice, best wishes Vicki x
