Q: Infectious Diseases Question
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 28th, 2007
I am just wondering if the symptoms sound as if they could be tetanus? or perhpaps something different? I am aware that Tetanus is very rare but am nonetheless concerened due to the neck stiffness/pain as well as the jaw pressure/pain and tightness. I haven't had "lockjaw" so to speak, I have been able to chew, albeit with some discomfort and difficulty. It's been about 11 days since I incurred the injury with the x-acto knife in art class. This is causing me an extreme amount of anxiety and I am looking for a second opinion - my primary care doctor feels that tetanus is more or less and impossibility considering my prompt booster after the injury, and my history of proper immunization. A second opinion would due a great deal to put my mind at ease, or help me promptly choose my next course of action. Thank you so much in advance for your time.

According to your symptoms and period of 11 days after injury, tetanus is not much possible. Even if you were infected, incubation period (period without symptoms) of the tetanus lasts a few months not 11 days. According to the all negative medical diagnostic tests, your symptoms could be due to anxiety. You may take some non-opiate painkiller to relief the pain.
