Q: Dark Brown Discharge

I just went to the bathroom to discover that I have some brown discharge on my panties. I'm currently on the pill so can this be some break through bleeding? I've also been diagnosed with BV and I'm starting the antibiotics today.

So what is this brown discharge? Should I go to the doctor again?

it is quite common to have breakthrough bleeding on the pill. however, if you are taking antibiotics please remember to use condoms as antibiotics can make the pill less effective

But its like.. dark brown. =S

and thanks for the advice. I asked the doctor and she said that the antibiotics of BV shouldn't affect the pill. But a condom would be a good idea for the next week.

Thanks for the advice!

Breakthrough bleeding is not uncommon. How long have you been on the pill?

You are definately still within the time period to be experiencing unusual side effects.

So the dark brown discharge isn't uncommon for the first several months? Also, its starting to change to a dark red now.. Confused

I don't think it's anything to worry about. I do that sometimes right before I start my period.

I also don't think it's anything to worry about. You said you were nearly ready to start your period anyway right?

Yeah... I took my last active pill last night. I usually get my period on Wednesdays.

Okay, I've been having some brown discharge again. This time its really dark and sticky. It kind of reminds me of molasses. How can I make this go away?

We really don't have any control over our bodies. Patience and waiting is the best you can do; just take the pills the way you should, unless of course the side-effects are debilitating. A little brown discharge is surely worth not being pregnant?

I've been taking the pills everyday at the same time.

Also, I went straight to the next pack this month. I should be having my period this week but my boyfriend came back from a business trip and I haven't seen him in a while so I took the next cycle. Could that be contributing to the brown discharge?

Oh man, definately. Some women have a hard time skipping periods, and end up spotting all month instead!

To a previous response- someone had stated that being on Antibotics makes the pill less effective, that is not true. I acutally just read an article earlier today on Yaz.Com! just so you know!

It is true. It just depends on what antibiotics you are taking. The ones I took last month was for BV. My doctor said that it would not effect my birth control in anyway.

HOWEVER, there are antibiotics that makes the pill less effective!
