Menstrual Cups

Hey, I posted a while back in response to
someone who'd bought the diva cup and was
worried it might be stretching her
vagina.
Well, my post isn't about that, but it is
about the cups themselves. Aside from the
fact that my vagina kind of sucked the cup
up inside of me - frightening mildly! - it
is actually comfortable. The only thing is
that I'm going to have to cut the stem
since it was poking me all day. I think
the most amazing thing I noticed was... I
don't smell like I have my period! I feel
totally comfortable.
It is kind of difficult to pull out, it's
pretty slippery but the info that comes
with it tells you to just stay relaxed and
keep trying, and as long as you do that
you'll be fine
Does anyone else use menstrual cups? I
really like mine so far. Let's get some
testemonials
They are cleaner for the environment for
sure!

mine is a mooncup not a divacup, but they
are just different brands; it amounts to
the same thing. i like mine for the
following reasons!:
better for the environment (the cup itself
is reuseable, and you dont end up throwing
out boxes of packaging every month!)
it doesn't dry you out like tampons, and
you don't get odour like with pads.
it makes you understand your mentrual
cycle better.
the cup doesn't have to be changed as
often as tampons.
the problems i tend to encounter are that
if i change the cup too often it can
irritate the opening of my vagina... if i
dont change it as frequently i find this
problem doesn't occur.
also, it is difficult to use it discreetly
when in public toilets (the *shlurp* noise
when you remove it lol) but once again, i
find that because it doesn't need changing
as often, i am usually home in time to
take it out and rinse it, so it's ok.
on the whole i much prefer it to tampons
or pads.

Yeah, I tried putting it in during my
shower last night but it wouldn't pop open
right. I have to do it with my left hand
(odd enough since I'm right handed) and
over the toilet
It leaked a little over night. I did cut a
little off the stem and now it's perfct

I think the cup (I use DivaCup) is
fantastic! I've been using it for a
year.
Better for the environment, no smell,
virtually never leaks (only leaks if not
placed well or left in too long), saves
money ... I could go on and on!
It was a little tricky at first, but I
just needed time and practice to figure
out the best way to insert and remove for
my body.
I also appreciate being able to monitor
exactly how much I bleed if I want to.

Update On My Cup!

Okay! So I'm on my second period with my
cup and at risk of sounding like an
infomercial, I'd just like so say I love
this thing! Mine is a divacup - I won't
post a link because then I'll really look
like a spammer, but that should get you a
good result in a search engine.
This thing is amazing. I don't smell like
a period. I don't leak into my underwear.
I don't have to use pads (I abandoned
those years ago anyway!) and now I don't
even need tampons... which can be very
painful to remove, agree? Plus there's the
risk of tss...
I think the best thing for me is how
convenient it is. You only have to clean
it out twice a day: when you wake up, and
before you go to bed. Unlike tampons or
pads, you don't have to carry anything
around with you. There are no noisy
wrappers, and - even better! - no wrapped
up tell-tale residue in the waste basket.
Along the waste part, you're not
contributing to the heaps of trash around
the world! This is a waste-free menstrual
option. You rinse out the cup in between
insertions, and that's that. Because you
only have to do it twice a day at bedtime
and as you wake up, you're almost always
going to be near your own bathroom, though
a public bathroom really doesn't present
much of a problem either.
Tampons get squishy and icky and spot
unexpectadly; and if your flow changes
througout your day as mine does, it can be
a pain to try and predict when it's ready
to come out. if it's not... ouch! Then you
have to shove another one up there.
People might say "eeew, you have to see
all that blood..." well, yeah... but it's
better looking than how it looks ina
tampon or smeared on a pad. You just dump
it in the toilet and rinse in the sink.
I've gotten the hang of taking it out and
inserting it now. I really love this
thing! It's worth the price!

Yeah! That's awesome Eiri! Couldn't
agree more.
I've been using my divacup for over a year
now and love it love it love it. Worth
the price? Heck yeah! Cost me $30 and I
haven't bought tampons in over a year so
far.... huge savings. I'll only need to
buy a new one after having a baby someday
(they have a larger sized cup for older
women or women who have given birth).
I had to use a tampon once or twice when I
got my period unexpectantly and didn't
have my cup and it just felt icky and
reminded me how much I love the cup!
Oh Eiri, the more I read of your posts the
more I realize we have in common!

I heard about it long time about it and
decided to give it a shot. So I ordered
the mooncup. I didn't like it because
simple reason i couldn't get the thing in.
I order the right size and I did folded as
per the instructions but that thing just
didn't get in. Maybe it's because my
vaginal opening is too small for it but
thing is I couldn't get it in. I think it
would be perfect if the cup was made with
much more flexible material that made
insertion easier. But if you manage to get
that thing in without discomfort I think
it's a very nice idea.

A big thing to remember during insertion
is that folded, it's most likely still
going to be smaller than a penis! So if a
penis fits, the cup will fit too!

true but remember when you fold it it's
not smooth surface like a penis head or
like a tampom. Folded is way bigger than a
tampon. And it's ready to pop open if you
don't hold the whole thing very tight,
it's very strong material. That adds to
the difficulty of insertion. So I think
there is room for improvement with that
cup.

It needs to be somewhat strong material
that pops open so it will maintain its
shape and a good seal around the edges as
you move throughout the day and night.
I do understand - I found insertion a
little tricky at first too. I'd have it
folded and all ready to insert and then...
P.O.P!! The trick for me was to try
different positions until I found one that
worked well for me. For me, the easiest
position for insertion is standing with
one foot on the floor and one foot up on
the edge of the tub (or toilet seat). I
also read about another trick - to make
sure the cup opens properly once inside -
reach a finger in and give the cup a
little spin - that makes sure there's a
good seal and that the cup's opened. I
had a couple leaks before I learned that
trick.
It's too bad it didn't work for you, but I
guess since women's bodies vary so much it
can't work for everyone.

True the head of the cup isn't perfect
like a penis, but if you find the right
grip, you can get it most of the way in
before it does that half-unfolded stuff. I
have to use my left hand as I mentioned
before. Not sure why it's more comfortable
that way but it is. I always did tampons
with my right hand; never could get the
hang of it with my left.
As for the popping open once it's
inside... It'll be sort of an oval when
it's half popped, and so I've found that
reaching a finger in and pressing against
one of the long sides will break the
suction and let it pop right. I can feel
it go "thmp" against my vaginal walls!

i never have problems getting mine to open
up once inside. as you've noted, the
material is so strong that once you let go
it kinda goes .t.h.u.d.o.i.i.i.n.g!!!! i
fond i only ever really have to insert it
a little bit and then the suction action
takes it the rest of the way in.
i too have a small opening but i dont find
insertion a problem. the issue i have is
with removal because you have to remove it
in it's fully opened state. but as long as
i dont change it excessively often then
the discomfort doesn't bother me much.

Yeah, I have mild pain when removing it
because it's open; that hurts sometimes.
But I only have to change mine twice a
day.
