Q: Need Advice, Lower Back Soreness

A little history: I'm a 26 year old male, never injured my back or had issues before. I'm in good shape 5'11 185 pounds, relatively little fat.

A week ago I went a little too hard one day. I hit golf balls, baseballs, then worked out. I think where things might have went wrong is how I dropped my weight bar after doing military presses--I was really tired and just kinda threw it down and it jolted my back. I work out every other day.

Well the next morning my lower back was very very stiff and sore. At the far bottom of my spine. I didn't feel any pain until that morning. Not immediately. (Not even sure what caused it).

Anyhow, it hasn't improved very much over the last week. It doesnt hurt unless I bend the lower portion of my back either way. Walking is fine. Bending over can hurt.

I've take ibuprofen and read tons of different opinions on what to do. Some say stretch it out and keep exercising, some say lay around and ice/heat it.

In your opinion, what do you think it could be? What should I do?

Thanks in advance guys!

That's tough. You pretty much have to do what is right for you. You don't want to hurt yourself any further so if anything you are doing becomes uncomfortable you should stop immediately.

Personally, I would suggest streching and heat. Moist heat is the best for muscles. They have moist heating pads (or you can just use a sock with rice). And don't overdo the stretching.

If it continues to much longer you may want to consider seeing a doctor to make sure you didn't injure yourself. (More than a muscle pull).

I hope you are feeling better soon. Keep us posted!

I'm not an expert really but I know if you have radiating pain down a leg or an arm then it's usually more serious (a disk hernation possibly). It sounds like a muscle problem/ or spasm or pulled muscle or something to me. Maybe try getting massages a couple of times a week from a licensed therapuetic massage person might help alot along with stretching and swimming in a pool. I was always told to alternate ice and heat when something like that happened to me and to take ibuprophen and use like an aspercream or icy hot. Hope this helps
