Q: Abnormal Periods

I have a question regarding my periods. I had been having abnormal periods for about 9 months. It had become longer in the amount of time it would start and finish but there would be days in between where there would be nothing. the flow was lighter and sometimes i would have more cramping than before. I was having unprotected sex during this time. Then 3 months ago I stopped having sex and my periods were normal again until this month, and i know I had sex during ovulation. I am wondering if i could have been getting pregnant but the embryo is not able to implant?

Welcome to ehealth!

I agree, it could be possible. But you will never know for sure.

Are you trying to conceive?

Is your period late? When was your lmp? Any time you have unprotected sex there is a possibility of becoming pregnant. It is much more difficult to tell when you are ovulating when you are irregular. So you may be pregnant.

I used to have abnormal periods about 4 or 5 years ago and I never really thought much of it. I went to see the doctor about it because I also had severe cramps and some pain not during my period. I wasn't sexually active at the time but they put me on birth control pills to regulate my cycle and it seemed to help after a while. Then a month and a half ago, they found a huge ovarian cyst in my abdomen that they said was probably there for 5 years or more and looking back, was probably the source of my problem. My doctor never checked into the possibility and it wasn't discovered until I had my 20 week ultrasound and it had to be removed during pregnancy. Of course, I'm not saying that that is the cause of your irregular period, but I think it's awesome that you are seeing a gynecologist because you just never know. People can give every opinion in the world on here but only a doctor can diagnose what's causing the problem for sure. And even then, you sometimes have to ask a lot of questions and urge them to be thorough and not just dismiss you with some pills. Good luck to you with your appointment. Make a note of all your symptoms and ask a lot of questions. It could be nothing at all serious but you'll feel better if you make sure.

The strangest thing is just that while i was not having sex my periods were normal. I have been worried for awhile that i will not be able to have anymore children. These are the reasons i am obsessing over this, i guess.
