Sir:

I read your site with great interest. I have been suffering from gout for the past 18 years since I was diagnosed at 25 year s old.

1. I am hypertensive and taking Adalat GITS 30 mg, a calcium channel blocker. Is this a major problem? This is not a diuretic drug.

2. Should I be taking BK forever or just two to three weeks? I am planning to do 1/2 TSP for night and morning but 1/4 tsp 2 hours a day until I hit your recommended dosage. Should I lower it?

I would really love to get rid of this problem as it has been debilitating for me.

I am not a healthcare professional. Neither baking soda is for treatment of gout in mainstream medicine. The following is for info only. Please obtain medical advice from your doctor.

1. Baking soda can elevate blood pressure. Check with your doctor before trying baking soda.

2. I took b.s. for a few weeks the first time I used it. Now I only use it occasionally. I would let your doctor answer your question.

3. Nifedipine (Adalat GITS) causes gout in 1% of the users. On the other hand, losartan/cozaar (an ACEII receptor blocker) can lower both the blood pressure and the blood uric acid level, thus is beneficial for gout. It is possible your gout is caused or aggravated by nifedipine. You may like to discuss with your doctor about replacing Nifedipine with Losartan.

Good luck.
