Q: Chances of HIV after sex w/ CSW (commerical sex worker)
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 18th, 2007
I had protected encounters (used COndoms) for about 10 times in last one year with CSW. I am not experiencing any ARS syndroms, like fever, lymph nodes etc. I am just anxious about getting HIV? I have read on most sites that probability of getting HIV despite condom use during intercourse is practically nil and almost always 80-90 % of people who are infected suffer from some symtoms, i am still worried. What can be the probability of me getting one and does it warrant any testing? I am anyways scheduled for a general complete body check in a months time. Does a general check suffice or do i have to get some specialised HIV tests to put my doubts to rest?

Having protected sex using a condom with commercial sex workers (CSW) is not considered risky behavior. In your case, the chances for getting HIV-infection are very small. To confirm or exclude an HIV-infection you don’t need a complete body check. HIV-infection is investiagtes using only serological blood tests. The standard HIV-tests are called ELISA and WESTERNBLOT. WESTERNBLOT is used if ELISA is positive. Tests for detecting HIV antigens (p24) and for detecting HIV’s DNA (PCR) are used only in special circumstances before the body becomes able to produce anti-HIV antibodies, or seroconversion.
