Q: Help! My Splint Hurts!

So, Yesterday I got my new LVI orthotic, which, if anyone doesn't know, is a semi-permanent glued in splint. I tried the usual kind and I never wore them much, now I can see why! My jaw, neck and back are aching. My wonderful TMJ dentist, who hasn't given up on me, said it would take about 2 weeks to see a significant improvement, but I was wondering if anyone else here has much expereince with splints, do you think the muscles will be sore while re-adjusting to their new position? I will say one thing, you know the masseter muscle in your cheek, I have a huge trigger point on the right side that always hurts, it felt better immediately when he put the splint in. HE he, too bad I have new sore spots now.All I can say is, I am so glad I am not working any more!

Hi Crystal,
Yes, it does take some time to adjust to a bite splint. You shouldn't necessarily be in more pain though. If you are, contact your dentist. New splints tend to need lots of adjusting at first and then just periodically after that.

How do you brush your teeth with the splint "glued" in? Try and relax as much as possible. Watch your posture and jump into a hot tub or get a massage. I think I need a massage today too. Cool

God bless...

Its not really new pain, like if it were rubbing, I know what you mean about new splints. They gave me this floss threader thing, the splint is only on my lower back teeth right now. My dentist wanted to start with the least amount of change, and see where he has to go from there. You put this threader kind of under the splint and between the teeth. But the massage is a good idea, I will call my awesome therapist. Relaxing is kind of difficult for me, I tend to be kind of anxious. I have to work at relaxing, isn't that wierd?

Crystal, that is very interesting about your splint. I have never heard of such a one. If you can post more information as you continue with your treatments and even find websites (with pictures) to post here, that would be great! Hope you are feeling better.

God bless...

It is called the LVI as you know. It is glued in, cause if it wasn't I would have taken it out by now! I have read that splints only work if you wear tehm 24/7, which I never did, so this made sense to me, at least to try. It looks like veneers except not quite as pretty, but it looks like teeth. I am only wearing a lower one right now and it is only on the back teeth on both sides. It builds them up to about twice their height. I have a crossbite and rally bad malocclusion, so my dentist says he is 90% sure my TMJ pain is from that. My neck and shoulders, even my back, have trigger points I can feel. Today is day 3 with it, and it hurts, although it is hard to tell if it is the same pain as usual, or my muscles re-adjusting. My dentist called yesterday and said the first few days can be rough. Well, I have had this for a good 10 years so I guess it may take some time to re-train my body. And, it feels really weird to chew, so I am living on Smoothies, let me tell you, the TMJ diet is fabulous, I have lost about 15 pounds in the last year!

I know with my splint, they could adjust (sand) it to make it feel better. They cost alot of money so if you are in pain, don't be passive about it. They CAN be adjusted.
