Latex male condoms (the most common kind) aren't all that risky in my opinion (female condoms are not as effective as male condoms). When used as intended (which isn't hard to do), they are almost as effective as the pill. The problem, however, is that a lot of people don't use them correctly. Same thing with the pill though. A lot of people don't take that as intended either. Obviously, neither one is going to as effective if it isn't being used like it's supposed to be used. We can't blame that on the condom or the pill though. That does not make them risky. It isn't their fault that people don't use them right!
Condoms often come with spermicidal lubricant. This, hopefully, acts as extra protection. Its job is to kill any sperm that might leak out.
I have used many condoms, often as my sole method of birth control. I have never had a problem. I have never been pregnant, and I have never had one break.
To get the most out of your condom:
1. Read the directions
2. Keep them around room temperature. Even your pocket is too hot for them!
3. Don't reuse condoms
4. Check expiration dates
5. Throw the condom away right after he ejaculates. If you want to continue sex, get a new condom. A condom filled with semen is slippery inside and may slip right off.
6. If you want to add lubrication, make sure it says that it is water based.
