Lanacane and Vagisil are trademark
pharmaceutical brands for the same
medicine: benzokaine. Benzokaine is a
local anesthetic that blocks the sensitive
nerves. Benzocaine is topically used to
reduce pain or discomfort caused by minor
skin irritations, sore throat, sunburn,
teething pain, vaginal or rectal
irritation, ingrown toenails, hemorrhoids,
and many other sources of minor pain on a
surface of the body. Benzocaine is also
used to numb the skin or surfaces inside
the mouth, nose, throat, vagina, or rectum
to lessen the pain of inserting a medical
instrument such as a tube or speculum.
Benzokaine only reduces the symptoms and
doesn’t act on the cause. In the case of
a yeast infection, the medication can calm
the itching but doesn’t cure the fungal
infection. Antifungal cream (clotrimasol
for example) should be also used to treat
the yeast infection. You may consult a
dermatologist to identify the precise
reason for itching who can also prescribe
you proper medication.
