I have a 30 yr old friend that I feel may have ODD (oppostional defiance disorder). She will argue with anyone and everyone about EVERYTHING. For example, if we or she and anyone else agree to go to a restraunt she will always want to go somewhere else and if everyone agrees to go then she will change the place and want to go somewhere else. She will change the place over and over just to be difficult. She will also ask specific questions that she knows will cause a problem or arguement and that you can't possibly give an answer that will make her happy. She looses her temper and will throw tantrums if she gets really mad (including hitting her husband). She often does this in front of her children but will blame it on whoever she is mad at-that they made her act that way. Nothing is ever her fault and she is impossible to reason with. She oftens makes things up and twists the words of others around in order to cause conflict. Her daughter has been diagnosed with ODD. I can not find any information online about adults with ODD and have been told that maybe she is bi-polar. She has lost all of her friends (she dumps them when she doesn't get her way) and her husband is about ready to leave her. I don't know if she has a disorder or if she is just a hard person to get along with. I really feel she needs help but am not sure how to go about talking to her about it. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Doesn't sound like any form of bi-polar, so I wouldn't worry about that. If she had that she'd be having long bouts of serious depression where she may attempt to commit suicide. It does sound like its possible she may have oppositional, all of the symptoms fit and she meets all the criteria as stated in the DSM-IV. As for help this is unfortunately one of the hardest disorders to work with. As far as I know, there is no medication to help it and since it usually does not lead to physical harm for either the person doing it or their friends/family there is nothing you can do about it. They have to be willing to seek treatment, but cannot be forced.
