I'm 35 years old, I've recently had a anterior lumbar spinal fusion in February 2007 on L4,L5,S1 I have two rods with six screws. Would carrying a baby be to stressful on my back? Would I be able to have a normal pregnancy? How long should I wait?

Re: Pregnacy After Spine Surgery
I think that that would be a lot of stress on your body at this juncture. I would say to ask your doctor. Mine is very straightforward with what should and shouldn't be done. I have that exact same question that I am going to be asking him when I go. Perhaps we could compare stories. I had almost the exact same surgery, but it was my L2-S1, at the end of Feb. I hope that you are doing well!! Did you have it at a Chicago Hosp?

Thanks for the reply, I have asked my spine surgeon and he said it would be fine to get pregnant after a year. I'm just a little leary about it. How are you doing? I'm doing pretty good every day i get better, started out with a walker, now I'm walking up & down stairs with no problem. I had a great doctor from Advocate Lutheran General in Park Ridge Chicago.

That makes sense, seeing as they look at a year as the turning point. Steps huh? Thats great! I don't have steps in my home, but I did go visit work recently and found it to be a little tough. Let alone to do it 10 times a day Smile I am doing well. I had some nerve issues along with things so that is getting back on track. Everything had started to wrap itself around my spinal column, so I am glad that is over. They also did a monitor with a muscle monitor. I have some pain left over from that, but they think that the PT will help. Are you in a brace? I have mine until May. I am looking to be a mom at some point as well, so your question hit home....
I had a good dr. as well, in Milwaukee. Glad to hear you are doing so great!

I do have some nerve problems in my lft leg all the way down to my foot which is so annoying, I start PT next month hopefully that will help, if not I will have an outpatience procedure where they will scrape the bone so it's not pinching on the nerve. No not in a brace, I have a belt though, it makes my back worse so I don't wear it often. I have two teenage girls it would be a big gap between, but always wanted that boy, so we'll see how I feel. I think you will be fine...
Give yourself time to recover everyday gets better!
