Recently, I have undertaken an important initiative to propose much-needed legislative reform to Social Security Disability guidelines as they relate to victims of multiple sclerosis and other chronically disabling diseases.
Under current law, there is no provision for those who suffer from debilitating chronic illnesses to receive disability benefits at times when they are unable to work, while reserving eligibility for future assistance if they are able to return to work in between attacks. Since permanent disability can be difficult to qualify for, many people with MS and other chronic disorders aren't getting the assistance they so desperately need. There is also no incentive for those who are on disability to return to work as they would need to endure the approval process all over again if their condition worsened.
To gain credibility at the federal level, the petition will need to be signed by 10,000 U.S. citizens. Since I began to promote this initiative just a few weeks ago, over 500 signatures have been generated by those who are battling various chronic conditions, as well as physicians, advocacy groups and other concerned individuals.
Please help spread the word about this important petition today. As soon as I have gathered 10,000 signatures, I will present it to the House Ways and Means committee in support of a proposal for a legislative amendment to the SSA disability guidelines.
